What would you want?
368 1:14 twist
.408. 1:16 twist
.451 1:18 twist
.50 1:24 twist
.54 1:28 twist
The ultimate muzzleloaders
.368 for 300 gr lead conicals
.408 for 410 gr lead and 300 gr sabotless
.451 for 460 to 530 gr lead and a multitude of sabotless
.50 for 460 to 600 gr lead , saboted and sabotless
.54 for 425 to 750 gr lead and saboted bullets
Coyotes to elephants to target competition
I thing these 5 choices would handle everything a person could ever want to do with a muzzleloader. In my opinion if I was going to choose a gun these are the barrel twists I would want. I think these would provide supreme accuracy and versatility.
What do you guys think ?? What would your choices be ?

The .368, or the .408 Would be AWESOME!! Pretty sure we are .45 Cal Minimum on Deer? So that part would be a bummer! But both of these Calibers would be FUN!

Although the Ultimate (RUM & BP Xpress) are heavier rifles that most likely don't lend themselves to long stalks, they are proven long range hunting rifles. With the advent of the new breech plug designs from Arrowhead for the Remington Ultimate and soon the Ultimate Firearms Inc. rifles, they are finally going to be able to do what they are designed for with a .50cal rifle.

ATM it would probably be a .400x.408 Cheytac blank although McGowen has a .402x.409 that looks interesting too. Its only offered in 1-14 or 1-18 and if i went to a 40cal i would probably prefer a 1-16 just so its slow enough for conicals but fast enough for some BH209 sabotless loads. It might be a tad slow for some of the long 300gr 40cals unless you can shoot them faster.
If it was a dedicated 300gr sabotless rifle for BH209 the 1-14 is probably a better choice to insure stability. Most 405wins are 1-13 or 1-14 and shoot a jacketed 300gr upto about 2200fps. From what ive seen sofar thats about what you will get from 120gr BH209 and a 300gr 40cal sabotless.

I consider myself lucky and fortunate. I have a 1:24 twist .50 caliber Pedersoli Missouri River Hawken. Just got it. Headed to the range this coming week to stretch its legs.
The workmanship is a sight to see. Nothing but quality.
