what kind of oil?
right now i am putting bore butter in my encore barrel between uses to prevent rust. running a patch or 2 down before i go shoot or hunt. i' ve heard different things, both good and bad in doing this so i am wondering instead of bb what kind of gun oil do you guys use. do you run a patch down barrel before shooting or hunting to get oil out? one more question, what do you guys think of the jb paste and bore bright. all opinions and experiences welcome. thanks guys.

RE: what kind of oil?
I have been using Bore Butter as a cleaner/rust preventative in my Knight barrel for the past 12 years with no ill-effect. Most mention that normal oil will foul sooner than bore butter. However, I will use something like Break-Free/CLP on the outside during long-terms storage (b/t seasons). This is what works for me....I shoot a blued steel muzzleloader too....No rust on my guns.

Bore butter/Wonder lube does not prevent rust in your bore... read your package label. " INHIBITOR" does not mean " prevent" ... refer to your dictionary.
As a reference point, I " discourage" everyone I see from smoking cigarettes or driving a car alcohol induced... but it surely won' t prevent them from continuing. That' s what' s on the front label of your wonderlube - bore butter.

RE: what kind of oil?
I agree with Triple Se7en. I use bore butter for patches and packing concials but never as a rust preventative. After my rifle is water cleaned, I run some hoppies #9 or similar type stuff on patches down the barrel, then a few dry patches, and finally some denatured alcohol on a patch and let it sit for about ten minutes. Then two dry patches again.
If I plan to shoot it again in the very near future, say a couple of days, I will not oil the barrel. If I am going to put it away for an extended period of time I run a light patch down the barrel with some 3-1 household oil, and store it bore down. Then before I shoot again, I run some dry patches down the barrel to remove the oil.
My Renegade is about 27 years old and still no rust in the barrel that I can ever find, and none on the outside. So I figure if it works this long, why change. All my rifles I treat the same way. If it works for you, and your happy with it, keep doing it. Good luck shooting and hunting....

bore butter with sabots will cause accuracy problems according to T/C. It was not meant to be used for sabots. Use #13 between shots when shooting sabots. I used to use borebutter strickly out of force of habit when changing from round ball T/C hawken to my knight Wolverine. But after working with accuracy issures, I called T/C about it. They said since the bore is not perfectly coated with the borebutter, it can make inconsistent pressures that causes inconsistent velocities, accuracy, etc. So I took there advise and they was right.
As far as for preventing rust, there is so many better alternitives out there instead of borebutter, I am not sure why someone would use it as such. The days of needing to use pure butter to prevent rust have been over for quite some time.

RE: what kind of oil?
when i go and shoot with my encore, i run a few patches down the barrel till i come up with a perfect patch. i' ve had no accuracy problems so far. at 50 yards, 3 bullets in an area the size of a dime and at 100 yard a little more than a quarter with 3 shots. so as far as accuracy i don' t see it hurting me. back to my question, what kind of oil do you guys use to prevent rust and do you make sure its all out when you go to shoot or hunt? or do you fire a primer to get it out? i have an encore remember.
