buffalo bullet conicals
i have a T/C hawkins flint with 1/48" barrel. i' m thinking of shooting some conicals, and thought of 245 gr buffalo conicals. my question is how good of a fit are they going to be in my .50 cal barrel. i' m tring to find out the measerment of the top of lands and the bottom of the grooves. i found some bullets at gander mountian that had a .512 dia. marked on the box for .50 cal. are the top of the lands .500 dia or the bottom of the grooves? and how well the ease of loading the .512 dia, in my barrel? thanks..............bob

I have a Renegade in .54 caliber which is a lot like the Hawkins. I have shot conicals out of mine, and they shoot fine. I like the T/C maxi ball in 430 grain but they are a little too much for deer. I also have a LEE R.E.A.L. mold that makes a 300 grain conical which shoots fantastic out of the Renegade. I will advise that you might want to use wonderwads or bore buttons. They really make a difference. Years ago, I did shoot some Great Plains Conicals, and they were fantastic for shooting. I have never tried sabots out of the gun and do not think I will. It is also a fantastic roundball shooting rifle. If I were you I would get a few different weight conicals and some wonderwads, most come pre-lubed but if not a little bore butter or crisco will work, and try them out. Any reason to go out and shoot is good enough for me. Have a good one.

RE: buffalo bullet conicals
bob, i am new to this board so please be patient with my rambling, if you check you may find that the .511 /.512 marrked bullets are for loading in metalic black powder cartrages , if my memory serves me correctly. in a muzzel loader they may develop way to much preasure, thus very poor acuracy and/or danger to all around? if it were me i would check with makerof bullets, thanks for listening. good luck

....flathead.... I called T/C to find out what my barrel spec' s were. they told me that the bottom of the grooves were .512 and the top of the lands were .500......... so those bullets labeled .512 will work in my hawkins .50 cal.....so if any of you guys out are wondering what your barrel spec' s might be, you can call your guns maker.
