When I was young and dumb I had just missed a decent buck at about ten yards, shot right over its back! I was walking out of the cutovers and three doe come running by at about 120 yards and I nailed the biggest one on a dead run. I would never do that now and do not promote shooting that way, but like I said, I was young and dumb.

My average muzzleloader shot is <75 yards. My longest shot on deer was 172 yards. My two longest shots on hogs were 192 and 226 yards. i did kill a huge coyote at over 300 yards with a Hail Mary shot. Meant to scare him off and was surprised when he bang flopped.

Will not take a long shot on deer or hogs unless conditions are perfect for the shot: Good rest, no wind, animal standing still and broadside, etc.

Way back in the bad ole days of prb and "traditional" ml only, I made a 127 yard shot on a piebald 7 pt er. Hangfire too, only hangfire I've ever had while hunting, was creepin/sneaking up a 4' deep ditch then shooting off a 10" log for a solid rest, 50 cal., prb., 1/60 twist shooting 180 gr in ticking patch with bees wax n deer tallow lube over 110 gr of FFF Swiss with RWS #11 cap, never a hangfire before or since with that rifle.

Longest shot was in 09. Yardage 287 ranged after the shot. Up a beaver swamp/drainage. From a treestand bout 25' up. Big doe crossing swamp 2 beaver ponds up drainage. Rifle is 50 cal. Savage MLII, 300 gr. Speer .458 bullet in a black crush rib sabot, 44 gr. of 4759, CCI 209M primer, Bushnell 3-9X40 scope, at shot deer DRT on high shoulder shot.

I love my SML rifles, 3 Savage MLIIs 50 cal., 2 re-upbuilt Remmy 700 MLs 45 cal. and a 45 "Slewfoot" Encore.

For me 151 yards (lazer verified), shooting offhand. 80 grains T7 fffg with a 185 Lehigh out of my .45. I don't think I would try shooting any farther than that...

128 yards for me. However, we shoot 3-4" groups at the 200 yard range. I would have no problem going out farther but I always set up my position to offer a shot 125 and in.

I hunt with CF guys and let them have the prairie and I hunt the creek bottoms. Both spots have about an equal chance to score a nice buck. Wont be long and the season is here!!!
