CVA StagHorn And Patched Round Balls
Took my cheap old CVA StagHorn to the range today. Decided to shoot patched round balls.
Distance: 50 yards
Gun: Old model CVA StagHorn; 1/32" twist
Scope: Weaver Grand Slam set on 3X
Powder: 3F Pinnacle
Primer: Winchester shotgun
Bullet: Round ball in drill cloth patch lubed with Goop hand cleaner loaded over a grease cookie.
Loaded the gun with 100 grains of 3F Pinnacle. Fired three rounds. These are the three rounds on the left of the target-all over the place.
Reduced the powder charge to 80 grains and fired a five shot group without swabbing. Not bad for an inline with a quick twist.
My old mentor from the early 1960s always used drill cloth for patches.
Next time i'll try 70 grains of powder.
Sorry, Uncle Joe; i won't use your complicated patch lube.

try 50 grains sometime. It might surprise you. And I am sure at moderate range that would kill a hog if you slipped it behind the shoulder. This is an interesting thread. Now I am going to have to play more with my rifle.
