Ageing Renegades
#2
Sounds like a kit gun because of the letter K. And as for age, well I purchased a Renegade in 79 and it too was a kit. The serial number is K 5***. But the first number is 5 so your serial would indicate its smaller then mine. I am not sure what the L is for. The K in my number is the first number and there is no L.

Looks like 77 for the Renegade and 70 for the Hawken.
In 1977, T/C came out with the Renegade as a lower-cost alternative to the Hawken. Instead of the Hawken's brass furniture, it had blued steel. It also lacked a nosecap on the stock and instead of a crescent buttplate, had a shotgun butt. This makes it more comfortable to shoot with heavy loads.

For some reason I think it cost me more than that when I bought mine. Being Canadian our dollar sucked in the 80's. Nobody shot BP up here and I had to order the rifle through a brokerage company who nearly broke me in my crappy Army pay back then.
But damm! It was mine! Genuine Thompson Center!!!
