Guess I need to confess....I've never killed an elk either...

If we are going to restrict conversations to only those that have experience then it's going to be mighty quiet around here...

I would feel very confident going after elk with the Barnes I recommended based on how well my gun shoots it, what I have seen it done in the field and what I've heard of it doing from other hunters...

Seems I remember Jim Shockey using that bullet exclusively when he used a Knight...

Please allow me to mention that i have never killed an elk with this bullet, nor have i ever killed an elk with a muzzle loader. However i have killed a lot of elk with a Nosler Partition. There was 1 elk with a 125g 6.5mm Nosler Partition. There was maybe 4 elk killed by a 100g 6mm Nosler Partition. My favorite elk killer was the 225g .358 Nosler Partition, a pile of elk fell to that bullet shot from my rifle. That bigger Partition really really puts the hurt on elk. Several elk that fell to various 7mm bullet, ended in our freezer. It seems to me, a 45 caliber 300g Partition moving at 1900 fps, would be deadly.

One of the Barnes bullet would probably be a good choice too.

The 300g 45 caliber Deep Curl should work OK, as should the 300g XTP magnum.

A large conical should really smuck elk. You know, a 500g chunk of lead flying at 1600 fps. Pity the poor elk what gets hit by one of these.

The Partition is my number one bullet in a CF gun. Been smacking deer and elk with them since the 50's with a 30-30. Never failed me.

One problem:

the last time I checked Nosler stopped production of the Partion bullet in the 44-45 pistol calibers.

Nor do they offer the .458-300 partition

You can still find some out there but they are drying up.

I never understood why Nosler never came out with a ML bullet? With 2 million ML hunters. It seems like a big market that continues to grow,

They did make a ML line with both 44 and 45cal bullets.

Nosler’s Partition-HG sabots feature the same bullet the company sells for handloading various handgun cartridges

I need to pay attention better, but I was thinking more of a bore size bullet.

To compete with the FPB.

BTW Swift A-Frame ML bullet/sabot combos or bulk are still offered. They are even tougher than the Noslers HGs. Im glad i stocked up when Wideners was selling the HGs for below half price. They are not the most accurate but are devastating at 2100fps from the NULA.
