Proposed changes
Well it looks like SD is catching up to the times. The GFP dept is having a meeting next month to propose rule changes for muzzleloader hunting. Peep sights, 1x scopes and smokeless powder and Blackhorn would be all legal if the proposal passes and would take effect after 20 days . Right now peep sights, scopes and smokeless are all illegal.
Only open sights , even Blackhorn isn't legal.

Those were some strange minutes i thought. Seems them official don't even know their own regulations.
Here is a direct quote from the regulations last year..........
...............Hunters must use muzzleloader rifles with open or peep sights, and may not use smokeless powder...............
Myself, i have been using a peep sight during muzzy season for years now. I have also been using BH powder ever since it was available for purchase.
It very well may be i will use a 1X scope this coming year if the proposal is approved. It will make my sighting much better. I long ago purchased a 1X scope awaiting this day. I have never used it.

For the longest time, 1x scopes were legal in Wisconsin but not magnification scopes. So of course I outfitted my rifles with 1x scopes. To me they are a vast improvement over a peep sight or fiber optic. Then they changed the law and made magnified scopes legal. So I have a lot of 1x scopes around the house. They do work really well. You will like the difference they can offer.

At the distance you and I hunt. A 1X is perfect. I'm using a 1.5x, and it seems perfect for the timber. A 1x would be even better, but I got this scope for a killer price. It's 1.5x5x32, but I just leave it at 1.5x.
