When I made the one for my tomahawk, I put a leather lanyard on/through the top of the holder. This allowed me to go over the head of the hawk and tie it down to the holster. I've gone through some pretty tough brush and never lost a hawk yet.

Nice. I think I may need to get me a .50 cal percussion pistol to carry along on my ML hunts. Something that would be a companion carry to my sidelock. I'm in no hurry and they show up from time to time for sale at decent prices.

I would not want to be disarmed by an angry mob of whitetail deer either.
I agree it should definitely have some type of retention, would hate to snag it on some brush and realize its missing an hour later.
