I need some of your thoughts. Out of all my sidelocks, I don't have a .54 and you guys keep telling me I should get one. I have my eye on a Renegade stock but I want to get a GM barrel for it. Now this is where my problem arises. Do I get a 1:28 LRH barrel in .54, or do I get the 1:70 and shoot PRBs.
If any of you have either of these barrels I would appreciate any info on how it shoots.
I know a deer wouldn't care either way if it got hit with a 54 ball, a saboted combo of some sort or a 54 (humongous) conical. I am more interested in accuracy out to 50 yds and stretching to 75. Also, what sabot combinations are your favorite should I select the LRH barrel.

Just my opinion... but if you are going to get a LRH - get a 50 cal many - many more options that way.

You only have a couple of sabot selections if you were to go with the 54 cal LRH. 50 cal different story.

54 barrels are really good for hunting with a PRB if you get a PRB twist... 1-48's work but...

The 54 is a far better gun than 50 when it comes to PRB's and hunting, other than that a 50 cal will always give you more options these days...

Sabot, I have a bucket full of 45 and 50 cal muzzys with various twist rates. But these guys have me thinking about a .54. I am leaning toward the 1:70. I just need a little push in that direction. I have about 2000 or so .54 RBs that I inherited which I've been using to recast .45 Maxiballs so ammo isn't a problem

keep it simple and kill cheaply with the .54 round ball.

I have both barrels and due to the hard time I had getting sabots and stuff for the fast twist, sold the fast twist barrel. The 1-70 .54 caliber roundball barrel is a great shooter. You would not go wrong getting that barrel.

I shot a 1:48 twist for a long time, it shot RB's ok and conicals much better.if your looking to shoot RB's then the 1:70 is the way to go. if conicals interest you the 1:28 is probably the better route. Ray

You should buy the whole Renegade, and shoot a PRB out of the stock .54 barrel. You might be shocked at how accurate it is with the right load.

Much easier to hunt with it than the longer, heavier GM barrel. I have a GM 1-70 32"barrel for mine, and won't use it for hunting.

2" group all day with open sights, and a PRB at your 75 yds.

Well the weight doesn't bother me. I always hunt slow and easy.
And anyway, its too late. I realized I had a spare T/C Hawken stock and as luck would have it, a percussion lock went off on Ebay and I won it and a good price. So I sent my order in to GM and ordered the 15/16", 54 cal 32" 1:70 repacement barrel.
But my problem now is it will have to wait until I come back from FL after the birth of my two grandsons this coming week. I wont get to shoot it until July. But I can live with that.
