Default 54 mountain stalker - sabot load ?

Smyers sent me some PR Extreme elite HP sabots to try out. This is for a .54cal mtn stalker. I have both, american pioneer 3f, 2f, jim shockeys gold 3f and goex 3f.

How many grains do you think i should start at?

With this big slug, im wondering how it will do in the cva's 1:48 twist.

Start with the typical 80gr 2f - 3f charge and see? Never fired a 54 with anything bigger than a round ball so im a bit worried about how bad i will feel after i pull the trigger

I have never shot a 54. I have no desire to either. Where are you going to hunt with it, Africa? Try not too flinch too badly.

I shot sabots out of that rifle. I used 85 grains of Pyrodex RS. They were a red sabot with a flat point lead nose, copper jacket. I forget their name, or even where I purchased them. They shot pretty good.

.54 caliber is not all that bad, although that light rifle does like to kick. Its hardly over five pounds. That is why I put lead in the stock. Made it heavy and soaked up some of the recoil out of it.
