Here in Michigan most all the trail systems are on state or fed. land. Nearly all the trails are a result of logging operations. Up keep is from the sale of snowmobile trail permits, and ATV ORV permits. Most all of the trails in southern Michigan (A line from about Bay City on the east to Grand Rapids on the west.) have been closed to all but horse and foot traffic which really pisses off the snowmobilers and ATV riders who funded the trails in the beginning.

In the early 70's a bunch of snowmobilers in my home town formed a club called the Michigan Trail riders. We leased trail right of ways from farmers in the area plus added in our own property to the trail. In all about 40 miles tied in with a state trail at each end. In the tail of the 80's the state was giving some funds to clubs to maintain a trail system so they didn't have to fund snogroomers themselves. after 4 attempts by us to get some of those funds with out any luck we shut our part of the trail to the public. We found we liked that better as we didn't get as many complaines from the farmers about trash on their property and the noise of piped sleds running near homes at night plus other stuff stupid people do on others propety. Since the trail was open to club members and their familys we also had control over the drinking and riding on the trail making it safer for familys to ride.
