new .54 renegade

Default new .54 renegade

hi folks,what is the best way to shoot in this new gun.I have 425g buffalo bullets and .530 rb.so far i have [email protected] t73f prb about 4"group.425 buffalo bullet.80g t73f about 3"

80 -90 gr for the prb is a good choice. My GPR shoots great with that charge, but I would go up to 100-110gr with the 425 gr. Buffalo bullet( or is that the Hornaday Great Plains bullet? I was thinking the Buffalo bullet was only 338gr.).Is that a stock barrel or a Green mountain barrel?

the gun shop has mabe 70 boxes of old 425g buffalo bullets.barrel is 1/48 t/c

If it was me I would go and grab them suckers . I only have 1 box of them left and haven't been able to find any since they closed up shop. I really like them Buffalo bullets. I have been using Great Plains bullets since I can't get any Buffalo bullets. ( where's this place at? maybe I should call them)
That renegade is a nice gun. It's on my list to find one someday. If you ever decide you don't like it , let me know. I'll give it a good home

Can't say about the buffalo bullets, but when I had my 54 Renegade it just ate up the 530" RB with .015" patch and a felt underwad over 80 gr of T7.

i'd get some pyrodex rs and give it a try again. I tried felt wads under that bullet and it doesnt work.

The Renegade might take some breaking in, so do not get too excited about groups. Mine sure did. I was about ready to send it back at first. But this was 30 years ago. I finally took some Comet and a scotch brite and worked the barrel smooth. Maybe the new ones don't need that.

90 grains of Pyrodex RS, moose milk patch, .530 roundball is a good load. With them Buffalo Bullets, knock the powder charge down. I got better accuracy with less powder. Since you shoot Triple Seven, try 65-70 grains once and see what happens. That is still plenty of juice for any whitetail you will encounter.

If you're using a wad under the patch, that might be good because of the Triple Seven but try 60 grains of T-7 and a patched ball without the wad once and tell us how it shoots.

Those are great rifles.. with out a doubt.

Dave, i can not remember for sure but I think you are the one that put me onto using the wad under the patch with a PRB in my 54, and I do shoot T7, so it has really helped me. Otherwise I think the heat created by T7 helps eat up the .015 patch...

I believe lead conical are the way to go for break-in. Shoot, clean and repeat.
