There a lot of peole that have a ton of success with SST/SW's, but there really have been a lot that have not also. For the price you are paying for them I fell there are certainly better bullets out there unless, you are making really long range shots....
of those two I would certainly choose the Gold Dot - or even any Speer Uni-cor bullet - they do not come apart.
The only bullet better than aBarnes is a Nosler Partition - no bias there at all hope you can tell that.... But those two are probably the best bullets for getting the job done on an animal
The sabot really depends on the rifle bore you are shooting - all of the sabots you have listed are good ones - you just need to find the one that best fits your bore. What gun are you shooting?
I was shooting 250SST with SB sabot and had very good accuracy and did get a doe this year, but after reading some post on lost deer and I think one of yours about closer range shots I was thinking of switching to something else
I have some 250 Gold Dots and considered some .452 250 XTP's
also some .451 250 Barnes X Bullets, the .451 260 Nosler Partitions maybe even a 245 Barnes Spitfire.
Too many choices I don't see many post about Sierra bullets, is there a reason why. I have Harvester SB, Hornady Low Drag, Crush Ribs and whatever comes with the 250 SST the black ones (HPH12 or HPH24?) to try with each. Any thoughts on the above bullets

RE: .45 Colt & .454 casull?
I am using a CVA Wolf, The SST with the SB loaded pretty darn hard, two hands steady hard push, when the weather got cold things got even harder. I thought going to a .451 would make things a touch easier and possibly give me a better performing bullet. I am using BH 209 for powder. Maybe I will try some Barnes and hold of on the Noslers for now. Can I buy Barnes X's in bulk someplace I haven't seen them anywhere. Thanks for your help.

The 300 grain .452 Gold Dot is listed as being a Cassul bullet, for what it's worth. That's the one I'm going to try some of these days. Local dealer was out of stock on them, last time I checked, but had more coming.

For short range shooting (<150 yards), I would shot a Noler Partition, a Barnes MZ or a Barnes TSX 45/70 bullet 300g. If I was very concerned about cost then my choice would be a Speer Gold Dot 300g.
For close shooting <=75 yards I would shoot a Speer Gold Dot 300g, an XTP 300g or a Powerbelt 348g with 70 of goex. My logic is these bullets are cheap for losts of percussion and flintlock plinking, but good enough to use as a general bullet. If I was retired and on fixed income, that would be my bullet of choice, a Speer Gold Dot 300g with a CR sabot.
You could of course use 1 bullet for all situations. If I had to choose 1 bullet for ALL situations short or long, then that would be a Barnes Origonal 300g, why?
it does not beak apart on close shots (but it doesn't expand well either, but blows a big hole all the way thru), it will shoot long, because of the .292 Ballistic Coeffient. Many guys from Ill shoot Savages 250 or 300 yards using this bullet, off solid rests and they know it drops 14" at 300 yards. They sight in3.5" high at 100, and shoot 67g of 4198, a 45/70 powder that gets us to a MV of 2350 in most Savages. I like different bullets for diffent guns since each gun has "what it likes".
