i'd use any conical except the maxihunter/maxiball.

i had a tc hawken also and it gave a pretty good kick with only a 295g powerbelt and 80g pyro select.

i was told by a retailer that the hawken model had a 1:48 barrel...i sure would like to confirm that somehow.

second thing i would like sugestions on would be type of ammo to use on elk. i'm in oregon and we cannot use sabots, buti can use anall lead bullet like the TC maxi-ball or Maxi Hunter....What would you folks recomend i use for maximum accuracy and killing power?....i picked up some 275 maxi hunter rounds the other day and haven't even tried them yet...i'm going to use Pyrodex RS for my loads....the 175 gr round ball will be fine for my deer hunting, but i thought a bit more lead would be nice for elk...

i've got a ton of other questions i could ask. but i need to get on the right track here first...

For elk, big and slow is the way to go, I would increase the weight of your bullets to 350 or 400g in the Maxi-hunter. If you can use (i.e considered legal)the 444g Platimuum PB or the 350g Harvester Sabertooth http://www.harvesterbullets.com/sabertooth.htmthey would be the way to go. I would get some fiber optic sites on the front sight (again if they are legal), like these from RMC Sports:

Your wise to get the bullet down first, since that is doing the job for you. In the above I mentioned sight improvement, now lets talk about ignition for a momemt. Since your shooting percussion, take a look at this:

and see if it is legal in Oregon, most states that have primitive weapons only season say "side-lock" or FL only (PA where I hunt for example is FL only), but make no restriction as to what the sidelock is igniting (musket cap or shot shell primer). This improvementwould give you a lot more "fire in the hole". You will need lots of practice, so allow for several outings to get comfortable with your gun.

The T/C tang peep sight fits on the tang. You pull the two screws that hold the tang to the stock and those in turn hold the rear peep sight. I have one of them T/C tang peep sights. They will increase you accuracy, especially at longer ranges.

There are lots of front sights out there you can purchase. That front sight is on a dovetail.

And the bore buttons can make a big difference in accuracy with some bullets. Especially at long ranges.

Each gun is different when it comes to shooting conical, personally I have had the best results fron felt wads I make my self with a plug cutter from my wood shop you will usually get the best results between 50 and 100gr quite often with Pyrodex often with P. I you have trouble getting good accuracy try putting a 29 gr by vol. of corn meal over the wad on top the powder I also put a greased wad over the corn meal to keep leading to a minium. Lee

Well i'm on my way now....i did some deep cleaning with hot water and Murphy's oil soap on the Hawken,and built myself a new shooters bench. i puchaced some 370 gr TC maxi ball and tried a few rounds at 50 yards last night. i didn't care for the pre-lubed bullets to much as the lube itself was crumbling and falling to pieces as i tried to load... think i mat clean them up and lube them myself with TC bore butter today....

i have a fiber optic front sight pin i tried removing the fiber pin and shooting it that way...worked ok untill low light time of day...i think i may have to put the stock iron sight back on it and file it down some. the fiber optic pins are great for low light, but they are so big they cover up your dot at long distance...i gotta work the bugs out of that after i get my loads dialed in and shooting consistant.
