RE: new bullets to try
Dave,
Simisane had it half right. In addition to there being heavier recoil, the main factor for heavier bullets hitting higher is the increased barrel dwell time. For any given powder charge, the bullet that is heavier moves more slowly down the barrel, giving the barrel lifting recoil force more time to lift the barrel. So in essence, your barrel is pointed higher with the heavier bullets than with the lighter ones. This trivia is more important to understand when you are using a fixed sight hand gun.

#3 was with my home casted 420 grain and 70 grains of Triple Se7en 3f and a wad. They shot lower then the heavy ones before which again surprised me.

I remember reading it had something to do with that, but at the distance of 50 yards I would not have expected the reaction quite as much. Perhaps today I will throw those others through the sizer and the lube them to see how they behave on the next shoot out. I am sure they are from a LEE mold as Black Jack for the most part used a lot of LEE Molds.

Dave - Just wondering, being that your bullets are pure lead, did you consider trying the .457" bullets? My GM .45 barrel measures .458" on the lands and .451" on the grooves. Seems a pure lead bullet would really bite into the rifling. I am just wondering if it would be too tight.

Mine is .451 on the lands and .458 in the grooves also. This morning I tried to load some of those bullets I had cast with wheel weights andsized to .452. I figured I could force that .001 oversize into the bore, but could not do it. The bullet was just too hard. I could get it in a little over 2/3 its length, but no more - even banging on my very stout brass short starter with the heel of my hand. At least I had enough bullet sticking out that I could grab it with locking pliers and work it back out. It probably would have gone in with pure lead sized to .452, but .457 might be pretty tough, even with pure lead.
