Default Homework TC Flintlock Green Mountain 21" barrel

Well it was like 90+ degrees today, so I deceided to shoot my TC FL. I sent the stock back to TC in Feb because two of the screws that hold the wedge pin had stripped the wood. They replaced the stock and all the hardware, really everything except the barrel. I bought a new 21"Green Mountain barrel. So this was the first time shooting the gun. This is a 1:28 twist for sabot shooting.
I was shooting my favorite load for FL:
80g of FFF Goex
300g Speer Gold Dot
Crushed rib sabot

Swab between each shot, 1 patchwith rusty duck cleaner, squeeze out excess, down once working it down, turn the patch over and run it straight down, up and down then
1 with dry patch

I was using the GM barrel provided sight.

I shot the first two shoots at 13 yards, and both were touching 1" below the center orange dot.
So I didn't do anysight adjustment. Actually 1 of them was touching the orange dot. So then I moved the target out to 70 yards.

Shot 1 was about 3" low and almost off the target on the left. I moved the sight.
Shot 2 was about 5.5" low and 3" to the right. I moved the signt.
Shot 3 was about 3.5" low dead center. Moved up
Shot 4 was about 2.5" low dead center. Moved up
Shot5 was about 1.5" low dead center. Left it there.

Here is the target. I like the GM barrel. I think I will stay with these fiber optic sights,
they should be fine for my 25 and 50 yard shots. I shot 3 more shots at another target, but didn't take a picture of it and other folks had shot at it also with a 30-06 and a 22". Basically was grouping higher to the left on the 2nd target, so I left it there figuring the barrel was warming the sabot too much and I was not getting accuracy, so I quit.

Chap - That barrel will get better the more it gets shot. But even now you can't complain about that "group". It would have been nice to see just how tight it would have been if you hadn't been raising the sight. It just looks like it was drifting left a little with each shot.
Let us know where it hits with a clean cold barrel next time you take it out.
BTW, mine has been shooting the T/C 275 gr Maxihunters good. I'm casted a bunch of 320 gr REALs to try in it and they shot real good too.

Good first roundChap. Looks like shots 3, 4 & 5 had less than a one-inch horizontal spread even after theheight adjustments which could easily have had some effect on horizontal. That's great for iron sights. I'm with Bronco - it would have been neat to see what kind of group you would have gotten without any sight adjustments for those last three shots. Oh well, next time. I love 300 grain GDs. Looks like it's going to be your hunting bullet for that barrel.

I'm not a fan of fiber optic sights, but the ones on the .45 GM LRH I just got for my Renegade seem pretty decent. I hope to have its virgin shooting session next week end with 285 grain Great Plains bullets. I have a pack of crush ribs for it, but haven't been able to find any 180 grain GDs or XTPs locally.

that load right there seems to be my little rifles favorite load...

They only get better the more you shoot. So you have to get out there and shoot...

Right that is what I figured also, the barrel was so warm it was hard to hold while swabbing. I just cleaned the gun, and made up 9 speed loads. Will shoot it again soon, it is a good shooter. As for the conicals, this is 1:28 so the sabots should shoot the best.

I like the 300g GD also, they hold together excellent, are inexpensive and shoot very well in most rifles I have. As for the fiber optic, I wish the front sight was a bit smaller, but I can hit at 70, so I am sure it will hit at 50. Which is about a far as I plan on shooting. Chap

Maybe I need to up my charge by 10g, your shooting about what I am. Crushed rib, 300g XTP.
I willgive it a try. Good to hear that they get better the more they are shot.
Thanks Chap

1:28 will do great with the right conical. That X-150 i had, had the 1:28 twist and you all seen what it would do with the 385 and 410 great plains conicals. You White owners see how those rifles shoot with the 1:20 twists and conicals.

Great shooting Chap, How about a picture of the new rifle?
