Default sight-in question

Got a 4X scope for my muzzleloader for Christmas. I already have it mounted and was wondering how I should have it sighted in. It is a 50 cal. CVA Buckhorn. I shoot 2 Triple 7, 50 gr. pellets w/a T/C, 230 gr. sabot. This bullet and powder combo ispretty accurate with iron sights out to 70 yds. or so. I'm sure it is beyond that also but, my eye sight limits my shots with that kind of sight.Should I sight-in dead on @ 100 yds. or what??????? Thanks, Scott Woody

1" high at 50 should be close to dead on @ 100 yards. I like my muzzleloaders to be dead on @ 100.

It really depends on your hunting situation and how far your shots are likely to be. I have a situation where maximum shots could be as far out as 170 yards (back end of a food plot). I sight in for an inch and a halfhigh at 100 yards. If my max shot was 125 yards or so, I'd sight in dead on at 100.

If you sight in 3" high at 100 yards, then you will be shooting thru a 6" pipe from 0 out to about 175 yards, that is the "3 over method" and corresponds to Maximum Point Blank Range. If most of your shots are gonna be < 100 yards, then I would sight on for 100 yard zero, if your gonna try longer shots say a 150 yard shot, then sight in 3" high. Good to hear from you again. Chap

I have the potential of taking 250 yd plus shots but I know that would not be wise with a muzzy. I limit myself to around 200 yds. with my 30-06 and even then I'd rather it be less than 200. I figure 150 yds. with the muzzy to be about the max I would actually try. Will probably go with the 3" method. Thanks!!!!!!! Scott Woody

After you sight-in at 100 yards dead-on, go back to the 25 yard spot to see where you're hitting. You may have to tweak that sight again. Now speaking hypothetical, if you are two inches high at 25, lower your sight-in one inch. That will put you one inch high at 25 instead of two inches high- then around one inch low at 100 instead of dead-on.

You want to createthe tightestshot groupfor your necessary close shots and occasional longer shots.
