75 yards with the deer creek
Just finished up my shooting for the day and i am beat. A total of 16 roundballs all shot at 75 and 100 yards. Worse group was 1 1/2" @ 75 with .440 PRB and 60 grains pyrodex. I found the problem with the caps taking two hits to go off. I browned my lock lastnight and forgot to oil it and it was freezing up! I oiled it and now its going off perfectly. I still have to find the perfect PRB load but i did shoot 11 225 grain powerbelt aerotips and i found the new load. After messing around with the lower charges such as 70 grains, i got very good groups @ 75 yards , the 3 shot group at the lowest area of the target in the picture was my first outing on a freahly cleaned barrel. #3 shot was my fault, that darn 1lb trigger doesnt go well with cold oily hands.. Next 2 shots right at the base of the orange dot, i let the barrel cool a couple minutes in between shots and i was very happy with those 2 shots. I almost called it a day when i decided to try 90 grains pyro P. The shot to the high right " Not the one with the stick, that was holding my target up, fergot the darn tape"
Next shot was a lot closer to where i wanted it originally. Recoil i wasnt impressed with, nor was i impressed with the groups.
My pet load was next. 80 grains pyro P.. BUT this time i took a crisco greased patch, pulled the skirt off, lubed that area, lubed the skirt on the inside and outside and the entire bullet. See the shot second 90 grain shot closer to the bulls eye?? Theres a total of 3 shots in there, Those greased powerbelts with 80 grains of powder went exactly into the same hole. This happened to me earlier today when i was messing around with a couple powerbelts earlier this morning. These powerbelts are shooting better when i lube the entire bullet. Tomorrow im going to start out with powerbelts and take it out to 100 yards to the final dial in for next years muzzleloader hunt.
Once its on sight im going to set up some logs at 45-75-100- and 130 and do the penetration tests again. Im going to use Cedar this time due to it splitting a hell of a lot easier than pinion/ ponderosa.

Cascadedad is jealous that he is not permitted naps at work. At least the supervised ones... I was told by Sabotloader that is all he does at work is sleep on the job. That's why he so worn out when he gets home.
Nice shooting there with that rifle. It looks like you have a good roundball shooter. I never played much with a .45 traditional rifle. I hada horse pistol in .45 once and it was fun to shoot. Other then that I stick to .50 or bigger... Again, that is some good shooting.
