Default Max Load?

what is max load for .490 RB kentucky -pyro? I thought specs max about 80-100gr 2FF. I'm using up pyro 3FFF and max 70 gr? dont want to blow pretty face off but want max range - hope to be able to reach at least 150 yds plinking or hunt hogs and 200 yds for shoot over water for fun thanks!

I'm of a mind that you may be pushing that RB at those distances. At 200 yards you may have as much as a two foot drop on the ball. I'd try to get a little closer rather than increase the powder charge.

I don't know what you are shooting, but Pyrodex is NOT designated by granulation size-it is "RS", "P", or Select". Then them dadburn pellets. So what ARE you using? I have used up to 140 grains of RS in my custom-made .50 with .490 balls, but my best load is 90 grains of GOEX FFg with that ball size. But my barrel is a custom-made one made from Chrome Moly rifle barrel steel, and is much stronger than some of the imports.

If this is a CVA or Tradition's Kentucky rifle I think the max 2f load is 110 grains of powder. Shooting 3f grade powder like Pyrodex P cut that back to 100 grains and no more. As for shooting 150 yards with a patched roundball... for fun you will have a great time. Don't expect to hit too much but you will have a good time. I like to limit a .490 roundball when HUNTING to around 100 yards unless I have practiced a lot and can place that shot each and every time at a further distance.

You better get a real good brand in a 54 cal. if you want long range. Even then after working with it and having a good custom made hawken with a 35.5 inch barrel it is hard too keep a good group past 180 yds. Lee
