Default my challenge

getting ready to goto the range in the morning, working on a load (hopes it works out). And I just made a new shooting rest that I have not fire tested.

Challenge, a new load working off a untested shooting rest.

Am I nuts?[8D]

the load 44cal .430 240 xtp in a mmp green sabot under 80 grs, 85 grs, and 90 grs

the rest an old 1 x 8 board just under 3 feet long with 3 screw to help hold the front bag incased in foam, and a U shaped tool holder. I have full stock attachment made of a very closed cell foam. sorry chitty camra so no picks

A simple gun rest when you have nothing is is a simple cardboard box. You cut V's in it and rest the rifle in the V's. Take any kind of weight and place that in the box to help hold everything together and solid to the bench. We used to use cardboard boxes all the time in deer blinds when we hunted long distance field for shooting. We alwasy built a short bench under the shooting window, and the box would fit right on that and hold the rifle up off the ground when nothing was happening. After your done, throw the box in the burn barrel and get a new one the next time you go shopping. Unless you grow attached to the box of course. Good luck at the range today.

I just got home from the range.

let me start out with tell what happen before I got there. I get on the road, drive about 1/4 mile got a flat tire. not a good sign. winds where very high. looking like I was going to have to skip the first week of hunting season.

got to the range, started at 80 grs of pyrodex p, 2 in group with a new load. upped to 85 grs, first two shots, with the 80grs, started working the scope. make a long story short, 3 shots 1 3/4 in just under the bulls right in the 10 ring.

also got the play with couple shockwave a guy let me have, some one is going to say I am lying. I put them in the same hole with 90 grs of pyrodex p. I just added them to my list of bullet to work on next year, if not this year, they where only 1/2 in under my aim point.

the rest I made works great.

over all a great day. but the flat tire. I'll get the only pic I am going to have up later, I don't have time now.

So the .430 grain XTP shot well for you then? Glad to hear that. Sounds like you have a good deer load.

Get an old wood surface metal frame ironing board bolt two 2x4 about 1 foot long on the wide end drill a 1 inch hole in the middle, make a square pice of 2x4 put side boards on the block mount a small sand bag between the side boards and mount the whole thing on the end of the 1 inch doll, drill cross holes in the doll so you can put a cotter key in to adjust the hight. It may sound ultra simple but I won the IL State Championship for round ball bench rest in 1978 using one the score was 147 out of a possable 150 so I know how well they work I am still using the same one, of course it has had a few paint jobs since then. on top of all that happen, while at the range, I was put my cap back on my top turret and it was wanting screwing off. I still had 13 loads to go, did not hurt a thing. talked to my wife one the way home told her I need a new scope NEXT YEAR for my ML. she yalled at me.

you're a glutton for punishment. First you ask for a rifle, then lots of bullets, then a scope... you're a very brave man.

Good luck with your hunting.

what she don't know is I have an scope on my sks I can switch out if I need too (I can use open site if need be on it). but it is next year I want a black powder scope. my poor hat can't take anymore hits

there was one thing I should of done that I did not. offhand my last 3 loads. I played around 100 yrd, knowing that I did not have time or any pre loads left. I did with my other 2 guns, just a brain fart on my part.

here is the pic of todays session. really wish I had more time

the strange hole where a shockwave (or 2) under 90 grs pyrodex p. the aim point was the .430 240 gr xtp that is right above it.

all the other holes are .430 240 gr xtp with mmp green sabot under 85 grs pyrodex p. the 3 near the center I am happy with. the 2 outer ones are the ones eather the wind got or I jerk really bad.

a close up
