RE: Honest Hunting Accuracy
Sabotloader says:
I'm with you there, Sabotloader. I have a couple of centerfires that can satisfy any need I have to go out and shoot very small groups, including a 25-06 and 22 Hornet. They're fun to shoot. But, to be honest I've hadmore fun trying to get this danged Mustang to tighten up. I usually take three deer a year early in the seasonfor the freezer. Then the rest of my hunting is playing around in the woods just in case that once-in-a-lifetime buck happens along. So I pass on a lot of deer each year.
I'm one of those weirdos who happens to like punching holes in paper, and I can do that all year long. (Though I don't burnnearly as much powder as Dave.) My latest addiction - the .58 Zouave and round balls - will likely keep me chuckleing and/or scratching my headfor quite a while.
You're right, ML's are truly a blast.
Like Dave said, I too shoot a lot and I use the word a lot, cause nobody shoots ML's as much as Dave, so i do expect groups @ better than 3" - and I use that word expect for a reason - and to be honest most of the time I do and can achieve groups from on average of 1.5" (with a scope). I am also one of those guys that you orginally mentioned that if I could not I probably would not have the gun. All of the rifles I have, including the centerfires, I have all the confidence in the world in for shooting an animal with in a hunting situation. Now then if i were shooting targets all day everyday - shooting for sub MOA's I am not sure that I have a gun that I could claim.... Oh! I do! a Sako bull-barrel 222 and a Savage bull-barrel .17 now those with the scopes that they have and a non-windy day and the proper bench... or in all the others reduce the charge down to become target shooters.... Well anyway - the real important thing in my mind - Do YOU know the limitations of your gun - then do you know the limitations of YOU and YOUR gun.
I found your orginal post very intersesting and very direct - thanks for putting it out there...
Keep shooting ML's because they truly are a blast - addictive - fun - challenging - frustrating - and all of the other things you can add on.

ok, I'm calm now. But where's the missing dollar?
You used 16 clicks/in to correct a 3" error at 25 yards and got 48 clicks.
I extended the 3" error to 100 yards where it would be a 12" error and require 48 clicks to correct. And we have proven once againthere is more than one way to skin a cat.

RE: Honest Hunting Accuracy
I do quite a bit of shooting with my flintlocks and don't find 3" groups at 100 all that hard on a calm day and with open sights. I try different stuff and see how they group but my concern is finding the proper sight- in to shoot the one shot bullseye. Once I am done working on the load and projectile I work on getting the first shot from a clean barrel in the bull; don't care where the second or fifth go as long as it's reasonably close. I don't take offhand shots at deer much beyond 60 yards and with a solid field rest I am as good as off the bench. All my treestands are built with shooting rails. When the hammer falls; something is going down.

Well if they get you confused shoot a very carful shot at 100 put it in a vise so the cross hairs are right where you aimed them and move them to where the hole is. That will give you a good starting point from there you need to go by the center of the group. Lee

That is actually the best way but for me no vice and I would need a second person to move the scope. I can come pretty close by strapping the gun to the front rest align it on the POI - then carefully move the dials...
