American Pioneer/Non-Fouling?!?

RE: American Pioneer/Non-Fouling?!?
One thing to remember with APP.. when you seat that sabot, conical, what ever.. really seat it firmly. Today I was shooting APP with some conicals. To be honest I really did not expect too much from the powder. What a surprise it gave me...
These different powders were tested at 50 yards with my White Bison .504 with the 1X Nikon scope. I was shooting .504 conials with different powders. The APP was doing a real good job today, and it was cold, windy and damp out.
The dark blue circle which was 70 grains of Pyrodex P is on the 3 o'clock of the plate because I put it there. I was having trouble finding my hits when I was shooting for dead center. That was why I went for the corners with the APP 2f. And when I seated the conicals I really put some pressure on the ramrod to seat them extra firm.
Then to see how much power 70 grains of APP 2f had at 50 yards, I shot for the dead center of a chunk of firewood. This wood was pretty water soaked so I was shooting at it with the intention of splitting it and getting the conicals back to examine their expansion. Both of them conicals blew right through that wood. The far right side shows the holes coming out of the woods. I decided, that would penetrate a deer real easy. And was very accurate as all I was aiming at on the front was the approximate dead center of the wood.
So needless to say I want to play a little more with the APP 2f....

"Oddly enough didn't SG have more variability than AP?"
Yes, it did.Presently i shoot JSG only in my Encore:It has a very tight barrel and that may be the reason JSG is veryconsistent in that gun. Also, i really bear down on the ramrod when seating the bullet. You can feel the powder compress. In my bullet box there aresome250 grain SST bullets in red sabots that i have had for a long time. These sabots are very, very tight in the Encore but the gun loves them. They shootbetter in the Encore than the 250 grain SST in the new Hornady three petal Low Drag sabots.

RE: American Pioneer/Non-Fouling?!?
I have had such a bad time with my savage and SG I decided to just try some nitrocellulose. 43 grains of IMR and 3" five shot group at 100yrds. This was a new rile and scope, so for my own piece of mind I had to know if the gun had a problem, now at least I know it does have the ability to shoot well.
As a curiosity I loaded some 265 gr swift a-frame with the same powder charge, to my surprise it did not hit paper at 100.
What do you think, should I keep working with SG or just move to another powder, I only have one afternoon and a day before hunting season. Leaning toward trying 3 pyro pellets tomorrow. My only concern is that the Savage was not made to be cleaned, the trigger not being removeable scares me, I know you can dry it but I'm sure you can see my delima.

Is there a reason you're not shooting smokeless powder in the Savage? I really always wondered about them shooting "conventional powders." If you have to shoot something other then smokeless, I think I would try some Triple Se7en 2f powder. But then I am guessing as I do not own one of them GREAT rifles. I do like them though. Good luck.

Appreciate the info and pics cayugad. How do you gauge seating pressure? Just by feel?
I would love to shoot a 250 lb 140 + Wisconson buck with an MZ, how would you like to trade out a hunt for a 120 lb 90 class Florida deer in 80 degree weather.

RE: American Pioneer/Non-Fouling?!?
In Floridas infinite wisdom they outlawed the used of nitocellulose based powder on October 4 without any real consideration of what they were doing. I bought my savagespecificly to shoot nitro two weeks earlier.Idon't really enjoy MZ as much as some, I just enjoy the hunting season. I shoot year round with rifle and pistol, butMZ is just a science that I respect but not enough to shoot as much as I should, I DO NOT LIKE CLEANING MZs. Can't bring myself to understand how a dirty gun can shoot better than a clean one, LOL!

RE: American Pioneer/Non-Fouling?!?
I heard about how they up and outlawed smokeless, and that was one of my arguments with someone when they said they felt that there was not a problem with States suddenly changing muzzleloader laws. Here is a perfect example. You bought a specific rifle for a reason. And probably paid good money for it. Then the State outlaws the kind of powder that the rifle is designed to shoot...
I am sure there is information out there as to what kind of powder might work for you. I hope you get your load worked up. Like I said, I would go with the Triple Se7en 2f powder and try that.

i have a 2" round wooden knob with a hole in it for the ramrod:Simply put it on the end of rhe ramrod and lean on it heavily until i feel the powder compress.JSG works much better this way.
The state of FL pulled a really dirty trick on you guys.
