Default cost per shot

I was talk to bother in law sitting up a time to go to the range, his son said some about taking thier brit .303 which cost them $1 per shot. I started thinking he likes to shoot powerbelts with 2 to 3 pellets out of his ml, asked myself how much money he is firing out of his ml. I started to work it out.

(cost/bullets)+(cost/number of shots of powder)+(cost/primers)=cost per shot

powerbelts is .65 +.5+.06 = $1.21/shot (does that sound right)

my cost with loose (pyrodex p)with xtp with mag express sabots

.43 +.18 + .06 = .67/shot

my powerbelt cost

.65 + .18 + .06 = .89/shot

I don't know if anyone has done this.

my bother in law should not bitch about shooting his brit .303 when he is firing more money out his ML.

Default RE: cost per shot

for me:

100 hornady balls : 13$----13 cents a piece

100 patches 5$----5cents a piece

1lb of schuetzen powder 15$-------20cents a shot @ 90gr charge

1lb of goex priming powder 15$-----1 cent(actually way less...but to be fair)

sooo it costs me 39 cents to fire my flintlock buying balls and patches and powder...

can get by REALLY cheap if you cut your own patches and cast your own balls...

costs me over a buck a shot to fire my 3006 or 22-250....pay over 2$ a shot for my 12ga turkey loads..

so shooting my flintlock is CHEAP! lol. only thing i can beat it with is my 22lr...

Yes in some cases, the cost per shot can get very expensive when shooting muzzleloaders. A lot of it depends on the cost of your projectiles. That is one reason some projectiles like Barnes, Nosler, Powerbelts, and Parker you really have to be careful about your shooting costs, or simply do not thing about it and spend the money.

Buying bullets in bulk, sabots, primers, etc will help reduce your over all costs greatly.

yeah that is why after the first of the year, I am going to start doing that with the bullets in bulk as well my sabots. I was not whining, about cost, hunting is not cheap, it is all worth it all to bring some meat home .

Loads I use in my Savage 10ML-II:

Light load (1800-1900fps):

Hornady Mag Express XTP bullet = $0.37
40gr Accurate Arms XMR-5744 powder = $0.11 ($18/can, 7000gr/lb, 175 shots/lb)
Winchester 209 primer = $0.05

Total = $0.53/shot

Heavy load (2350fps, equivalent of 150gr or 3 pellets Triple 7):

Hornady 300gr SST = $0.50
45gr Vihtavouri N-110 = $0.12 ($37 for 2lb can by weight, 7000 gr/lb = 155 shots/lb)
Win 209 = $0.05

Total = $0.67/shot

Compare above SST load to using 3 T7 Pellets or 150gr loose T7 powder:

3 Hodgdon T7 50gr pellets: $0.70 (100/box @ $23.00, 33 shots/box +1 extra pellet) = $1.25/shot total

150gr/vol Hodgdon T7 2F (about 105gr/weight assuming 100gr/vol = 70gr/weight if I remember correctly, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the powder): $0.29/shot ($19/lb, 66 shots/lb) = $0.84/shot Total

$0.17-$0.58/shot savings with "magnum" ML performance...and no crud ring, no swabbing, no corrosion, no gagging/blinding smoke cloud, no messy or hasty cleanup. Hate me all you want, "traditionalists", but I can't see any benefit to shooting any of the not-quite-smokeless powders, when you could just shoot the original black powder substitute and save money, time and hassle.

God I love my Savage!

Mike

It all depends on what you want to spend, you can scronge lead, mold almost any kind of bullet or as far as that goes a 54cal round ball will kill any game in this country and black powder or pyrodex is as cheap and will shoot as well as any other option. Lee

Actually, I AM reluctant to spend too much money for shooting.
I like the Barnes expanders on deer, and usually buy a pack or two to check my sight-in and deer hunt with. When I shoot for practice I use cheaper bullets and cheaper powder. Still have a few #s of Goex with a $7.95 price tag on it for my sidelock. I also cast my own bullets for the sidelock (Lee REALs) out of free lead I've hoarded over the years. I'm a plumber and when I remove any lead pipe, flashings, or pipe joints I bring them home with me. Probably have 300 - 500 pounds of pure lead piled in the corner of my shop.
Cost to shoot the NewEnglander is more like:
Bullets - $.02 (cost of the mould & electric to heat the lead pot)
Powder - .09
Cap - .03
total -$.14

Didn't mean to sound like I was calling anyone a whiner, I probably whine more & louder when it take 10 or 12 shots with those $1.00/ea bullets to get sighted in.
