CVA hammer spring that is. After the problems I've been having getting caps to fireon the old CVA side lock Hawken, I think it's worth trying to replace the hammer spring. Anyone done this? Do you know the correct terminology for the "spring" I'm looking for? "main spring" I guess? Any major obatcles to the replacement process?

CVA Parts and Service telephone number 1-770-449-4687. Call them and tell them what the rifle is doing. I am sure they can fix you up and tell you what needs to be done to get the rifle shooting perfect for you.

Cayugad, ever think of writing a book on BP?

Thanks yet again. I spoke with CVA and they were most helpful. The fellow suggested pulling the lock and giving it a good cleaning and then a light oiling. Could be just enough to make the difference. If that doesn't do it, replacement springs are available. He says I have a "Mountain" rifle with 32" barrel and 1:66 twist. Seemed to know that because I have two slip pins in the stock/forepiece. I did the "twist test" last night, and seemed to get a 1/2 turn of the rod in 26-27 inches of travel. I would have guessed 1:48 that being closer than 1:66. After 30 years, I broke the ramrod last night during the test when the butt slipped on the carpet and I instinctively "saved"the gunwith the tip of the rod. I ordered one from him to pay for his time. Thanks again!

When you pull that lock make sure the hammer is in the down or half cock position. You hit that arm of the sear and release that hammer and it hits your thumb you are going to know it. Also pay close attention to the sear, fly, and tumbler. That is where they normally gunk up.

I take the whole lock to the sink. Fill it with hot water and some dish soap and using a bottle brush, scrub the devil out of the back side of it. After that I spray it off with brake cleaner or carb cleaner and then wipe it down with paper towel until it is dry. Then I use aaerosol oil called Birchwood Casey Sheath aka Barricade and mist the back side of that lock. Then using Q-tips I like to wipe off any excess oil. You will be surprised how well this makes the lock function and speeds it up.

That link about might help you with what to look for.... Good luck.
