QLA removed? Results?

RE: QLA removed? Results?
Mossie - I agree. My two Black Diamonds, the Omega, and the Genesis all have QLA. And they all shoot very well. The QLA was originally billed as an accuracy enhancing feature - you get better initial bullet alignement when startinga projectile. It was an evolution of thecomponent bullet starting aligners used by match shooters.
I have "installed" the QLA in a number of guns, but have not yet ever received a request to remove one. As long as the barrel's QLAis bored out straight with a concentic internal crown, it should shoot.

My System One did not appear to like conicals either since I tried maxie balls, ballets and several no excueses I needed a load for elk that was legal so I tried a few things what I ended up with was 85 gr RS and a over the powder wad with 20gr cornmeal and that shot all of them under 4 inches and would put the ballets and maxie balls into 2.5 which was good enough for what I needed. Conical use requires a good firm fit to be accurate and most barrels are just too loose for them to ingrave the rifleing properly so they don't shoot well without the wads. They also lead up the barrel a bit and that also decreases accuracy over time if not scrubbed out often. In addition I find them hard to get started without messing up the nose of the bullet a little so accuracy is off to a bad start to begin with.
I use the xtp bullets from Hornady mostly because they load without deformation, the sabot seals the bore well and they expand well enough to give good performance. I agree that a pure lead conical is great performance if they load well in your gun but I find them more of a problem than I care for. Iuse saboted bullets or patched roundballs for all my hunting and shooting.

TXHunter58,
Yea, You should be able to work up a great load. Not sure why. Have you tried other heavy wt maxi bullets, like TC Hunters and Buffalo bullets?
If that barrel is a washboard TC should take care of you. With a peep you should get great groups @ 50-75 yrds... I would prusue it further..

Not sure how that helps me since I canonly use conicals in Colorado.
Shills: I will try some wads, but I may end up sending the gun back a second time. I have tried pyrodex, 777, black Mag3, and APP (all loose) from 80-120 grains. I have tried powerbelts, maxiballs, buffalo bullets, no excuse bullets and prbullets. Powerbelts are the ONLY ones that give me 1/2 way decent accuracy, and only with pyrodex.

This is to no one in particular...
If you have a rifle with a properly done QLA section made into what is an otherwise good barrel - the QLA section should not negate the barrel's accuracy potential. It can and often does still create issues that a conical shooter will encounter - the buildup of lube, fouling, or any sort of residue from the loading firingprocess in that QLA sectionWILL induce inaccuracy to someextent. If you have such a rifle and it seems immune to such problems, count yourself as very fortunate. Of three Encores I have owned (plus a G2 209x45) only one had a washboard barrel and a poorly done QLA. There is no way it was ever going to be a good shooter with much of anything and certainly not with conicals. That rifle also had a horrible trigger that had to be reworked and a loose hinge pin that was replaced(maybe a hungover Monday or late Friday production ). It is also the only one of those four TCs done in stainless.
If you think QLA sections cannot DESTROY accuracy potential of what is otherwise a decent barrel, you are simply mistaken. I have yet to read of a complaint on David White's forums or elsewhere about his work and can't recall an instance where his work did not result in substantial improvement in accuracy achieved.

RE: QLA removed? Results?
I had it removed on my omega. It was shooting 250 shockwaves at 1-2" groups but I the lighter longer bullets tha I wanted to shoot were about 3-4" groups at 100yrd. after removing the QLA it will often shoot under 1" groups. I have even been able to get 1 1/2" inch groups with 135 grains T7 FFF with Knight 250 grain copper BT plastic tip. I had it done by the gunsmith at Jay's in Clare, Mich for $40.
