the only time i see rust is when i use hot water to clean.i used water and hoppes bore cleaner to clean barrel for 35years.i bet if i had just put in the bore butter without that bore cleaner , i would have had rust.dont know, but hot water causes a lot of rust to come out on the patch.now, i use sheath and no more bore butter even tho it worked for me all those years.only time i am using bore butter now is for patch lube as i am getting back into roundballs and i gave up maxi-balls for powerbelts now.

since i switched to regular gun oil my muzzleoaders never have a problem rust wise. i think modern oil;s can sink into the metal and protect better. i fell for the line in the thompson center book about using bore butter all the time for everything and petro based oils being so bad. for me its a myth. once a year i use hoppes cleaners too on the bore and lets say my groups got back to new performance.

i do like bore butter for patch lube and i coat bore with it too. it makes rb seat easier and helps keep bore clean between shoots. it does freeze in winter.for storage, i dont use it anymore.i am shooting powerbelts now so dont need it in bore.but for rb.s , i use it and like it very much.
