the inside of most of the older Thompson Center Flintlocks is a cone shape. Like an ice cream cone but without the ice cream. The powder actually fills up that cone area and the charge when ignited is funneled upwards and out. Usually just the force of the water from a hot soap and water bath is all that is necessary to clean that cone area because of the force of the water caused by the pumping patches.
Sometimes I take a .22 caliber cleaning brush and put a patch on it, put some solvent on the patch and reach down in there and clean the cone. It is very seldom anything ever comes out on the patch but better safe then sorry.
Instead of my brass shell today that I drop down the barrel and then hit with a pen light, I wadded up a piece of aluminum foil into a tight littleroundball and dropped that down the bore. It really reflects the light real well when hit with a light.

I triple-fold a solvent-dipped3" square patch & put it on the end of a brass brush with the nub sticking out on the top part of the brush. When I hit bottom (breech), I turn the ramrod clockwise 4-5 revolutions -- then pullthe patched brushback up.
Sometimes I get a black ring from fouling -- sometimes I don't. When I get the black ring, I do another triple fold patch with solvent.
