Conical Question
I know the only to be sure is to try different bullets and different loads, but it there a general "rule" for shooting conicals? My gun is a T/C Renegade Hunter and has a 26" 1 in 48" twist barrel.
Would a short and lighter bullet group better than a longer heavy bullet? I am wondering between the 360 and 435 grain Maxi Hunters. The 360 is shorter and I was wondering if it "should" group better than the longer 435 grain M.H.?
Thanks,
Dave

RE: Conical Question
Your right Dave you are going to have to try them. I never had a lot of luck shooting Maxi Hunters. Maxi Ball on the other hand do a good job. So do the R.E.A.L. conicals. You might even try powerbelts if you like to shoot conicals. Dpn't overlook Buffalo Ball-ets or their large conicals. They tended to shoot well out of my oldest Renegade.
Of the two you mentioned, I think the shorter one will shoot better. Do not push them too hard (80 grains)and you should be all right. Also never overlook the roundball out of the rifle. Renegades shoot roundball for some reason real well. At least all of mine do.

RE: Conical Question
i have to agree with cayugad.i have tc hawkins.50cal. i used MAXI-BALLS for years then when the MAXI-HUNTERS came out, i tried them.i could not get them to group well. my friends had same problem in the 1-48 twist. so,i called THOMPSON.they told me they were getting 3/4 inch groups at 75 yards with the MAXI-BALL370 GR. so, i went back to them and not trying anything else.i killed a lot of bucks with this bullet in heavy brush.it plows right thru a small tree limb.i use 80grs of 2f with .370 MAXI-BALL.

RE: Conical Question
Is that CVA Buckslayer considered a conical? Has anyone used those - and if so, how well do they work?
OK - sorry - I just checked, and it IS a 300 gr conical for .50 cal.
So - how does it work?

RE: Conical Question
Thank you all for the suggestions/advice.
I've read several times on here about guys having problems with Maxi-Hunters. What makes the Maxi-Ball more accurate than the MH in the 1 in 48" barrels?

RE: Conical Question
The 50 cal Hornady Great Plains 385gr HPHB has been an exceptional performing and shooting conical for me. I can get just about any rifle to shoot them well.
T/C Maxi's are ok, but not my first choice in a conical.
As to why the Maxi's don't shoot quite as well I would guess that perhaps they are not being loaded consistantly. Maxi's are engaged into the rifling when loaded and if you don't load them consistantly they will not shoot consistantly. To do this, you thumb start them and then I give them a sharp "smack" with a short starter to "engage" them into the rifling.
Also, give wonderwads a try as well. More often than not I find better accuracy and less fouling with the wad then without the wad.

RE: Conical Question
the MAXI-HUNTERS are shorter than the MAXI-BALL.you want long bullet for 1-48 tc hawkins.ONLY shoot the MAXI-BALL 370gr.powerbelt 295 and for practice, roundballs.490.use 80 or 90 gr.of 2f on conicials and 70/80 gr.of 2f for practice on roundballs.there may be others but these are only 2 i have found that shoot well. i like 370 gr.MAXI-BALL the best for hunting whitetail bucks.
