Default COST OF BLUEING

i thought i would put this on as info. i blued a hawkins for a close friend. i am good at this too but have not done it for 30 years, ha. anyhow, it came out good but color is BLACK on that birchwood kit.owner did not like that black color.i put on 7 coats and heated with propane torch. so, i sent it in for him to THOMPSON ARMS.it is 65 dollars to have it blued and it comes out like a black with blue tint.looks like new barrel.for cost i think this is best way to go.it will stay on much better too than kit blue as they cook it for 30 minutes at 370 degrees. i may send in my barrel also as it is seen rough time hunting for last 40 years in laural here in pa.take care.

I needed a 12 gauge re blued long story on how it got jacked up. Anyway I found a local gunsmith school and called them up, sure enough they excepted firearms for students to smith and reblue, it took 4 months to get the gun back but its just like new again.

nice thing about THOMPSON ARMS ,day they get it, they dont fool around from what i hear.i would say from time sent in and back you are looking at no more than a week to 10 days. i will post how long it took ,out and back.if you have little boo boos on barrel from knicks etc, they repair that also in cost of 65 dollars.my friend had punch marks on his front sight area.they will be repaired . i think that is GREAT price to bring a barrel back to new look.

Wont that be on the lifetime warranty if you get some nicks? They say if you dont abuse it real bad then it is under warranty.

they said on phone that 65 dollars includes taking off the parts to be blued and putting them back on. i said that there was some punch marks near the front sight and i saw where a flint nicked the touch hole area . he said that is included in price when they refinish barrel.i thought that was good deal.bad part is price to ship it.14 dollars from pa, with insurancei would guess and say if you just sent barrel in for NICKS ,they will charge 65 but i think they will reblue it so it comes out nice.thats why they say the blueing/nicks is in 65 dollar price. i am real good on blueing too but have not done it in 30 years.you cant get good job at home blueing unless you HEAT barrel to bake it on.boy, does that rust /blue remover smoke and blueing too.you can do it cold but it wears off over time.also it looks REAL BLACK with no blue tint to black. i used to heat the barrels in my ovenor over burners of my barbacue.it takes a lot of practice to do it right and not burn yourself or finger prints or smear with blueing.it can be done but a lot of work and you may damage barrel. you can cold blue it and it comes out not to bad, but black. black is not real bad, i like it.if you do it cold, take 2000 emery cloth and sand barrel as bright as you can. then get a buffing wheel for your grinder, buff it real bright.secret to good blueing is get all the blueing off gun and shine it bright.brighter the better. to sum it all up.for 15 dollars you can get a kit to reblue your barrel.for 93 dollars you can get it done at 370 degrees bake on.if you have skill and can heat barrel, you can get a good job at home but i dont like BLACK with no blue tint in it.

Your report does not surprise me.. Thompson Center always did have an excellent customer service and fast turn around time on things sent back to them. It will be interesting to hear your observations of the kind of job they do on the barrel...

Looking forward to your reports.

$60 is more than reasonable. Never have seen this cheaper than $50 and have often heard of up to $100. Personally, though, I like thelook of the semi gloss (bead blasted) bluing - which looks very black.
