Default Shockeys Gold...First Impressions!

Went this afternoon and shot my Omega some before the black powder season opens back up. I bought some Shockey's Gold 3f powder to test against the 777, since that crud ring really annoys me. When I opened the bottle, I was suprised at how course the powder was. The 3f Sockeys Gold is much courser than 2f 777. I would really hate to see what the 2f Shockey's looks like.

After shooting the Gold I was suprised at how little my point of impact had changed. It shot about 3/4" to the right and 2" high but the groups were atleast tight as my favorite load of 777. I was suprised at it shooting high, as I would have figured it would shoot low. I would not have a problem with loading it up and hunting with it even though I left my scope zeroed for the 777.

I found much less fouling with this powder than with 777. However, those claims of shooting the Shockey's Gold over 5,000 times without cleaning(as seen in magazines)are definately not going to happen in my Omega![:@] But, it was easier to load multiple shots than 777 and easier to swab between shotstoo. Also it seemed to produce a little less smoke and noticeably less recoil. Final cleanup was not a problem either.

Overall, I'm pleased with this powder butfor the time beingI will stick with 777. I wish I had chrono'd the loads to see how they compared to 777 but I did not. My next experiment will be with the Shockey's Gold and my T/C White Mtn Carbine. I also have some Kleenbore primers I plan to shoot in my Omega after the season as well. Atleast I have plenty of experimenting to do after the season is over!!

Thanks for the report. One can never have too much info about the various powders.

excellent report. I would be interested in learning the chronograph results between the two powders. I've been shoot Pinnacle 3f and really like the powder and the accuracy. I have no chronograph so I have no idea of what the bullet is doing out there.

It would be interesting to see how field reports compare to APP's web site. I remember when Black Mag3 hit the market and people were testing it over chronographs. One person's findings would vary a great deal from the next tester's.

I hope a Shocky Gold shooter with a chronograph will do some of the same loads the web site did to see how different they are.

So what's the difference between Shockey's Gold and plain ol American Pioneer powder?

Comparing the loading data for the APP and Shockey's gold from their website, velocity is less than 50 fps difference. They only list velocity for their 2f powder though. I purchased 3f Shockeys Gold and it was courser than my 2f 777, so I would hate to see how course the 2f would be. I really wish I had access to a chrono so I could have compared the 777 and the APP.
