Default sighting in help!

I have a 50 caliber omega and a 3x9 scope and I am using pyro pellets and have been shooting good groups from 150yds with T/C mag sabots 240grn with 100grns 2 pellets, but last year I shot at a nice buck from 40yds and shot right over it's back should I resight with 150grns 3 pellets for a flatter trajectory. I would like to shoot to 200yds with maybe some power belts or something for southern minnesota. Can anyone give some pointers on some loads and sighting tips. Thankyou!

I usually sight in for 100 yards, that is about the farthest shot I'll ever have to take. If you are sighting in for 200 yards,I would definitely use 3 pellets to flatten out your trajectory. With my setup, I'm about 1" high at 50 yards and 3-4" low at 200.(150 grains pyrodex and 350 grain bullets)

Sight in for two inches high at 100 yards. That will put you in the kill zone all the way out to around 150 yards. After that according to the ballistic charts it is an 8 inch drop out at 200 yards. So you aim for the top of the back and let fly.

At the close ranges, aim for the bottom part of the kill zone and it should put your bullet midway in the kill zone. All of that should do you pretty well. That main thing is you need to practice at all the different distances you intend to shoot.

Your first clean barrel high shot is normal if you do not remove everything(lubes/oils)inside the bore first with two wet patches (both sides)of rubbing alcohol. It also becomes too high when you fail to go back to the 50 yard range for 'tweaking"after sighting-in at 150 yards. You need to either adjust your scope clicks or powder charge to find the happy medium of satisfaction at both 50 & 200 yards. Yes... you will need that 3rd pellet. But instead of another 50-grain, you should consider buying the 30-grain pellets first. A vast majority of MLs do not completely burn the 3rd 50-grain pellet anyways. Using 30-grainers allows you two options/choices .... ie.... 120 & 130 grains. It also gives you better odds that you won't flinch/jerk as much -when a fast shot is necessary.

Cayugad you said the ballistic chart said 8 inch drop at 200 but what charge and load was that refering too that seems like a pretty good setup. What load do you recomend me to try. Thanks!

I looked up 100 grains of Pyrodex and it said 1801 fps for speed. I then ran it through a ballistic chart. I re-ran it before this post and must have made a mistake. If you sight in 2" high at 100 yards it will have an -11.0 drop at 200 yards.

I ran a .430 diameter, 240 grain, BC of .185. I put the dead on at 133 yards which will give you +2 at 100 yards. It will also tell you the energy of the projectile. I used the http://biggameinfo.com/BalCalc.aspxto run it. Go ahead and run it yourself. You can put any number you want in there. And it will tell you the sectional density, so do not worry about that part.

The mistake you made was in trying to be ready to shoot something at 200 yards and thus being prepared to OVERSHOOT things at more reasonable (and more common) ranges! If your rifle shoots well with 2 pellets, resight it for 100 yards using the same load, and you won't overshoot things at the shorter distances. Don't feel bad-I've done this myself. Just take the ads about long-range shooting with a ML rifle with a little more salt than previously!
