Not sure what kind of stainless steel used in your gun but I found this online.

"Magnetic permeability is the ability of a material to carry magnetism, indicated by the degree to which it is attracted to a magnet. All stainless steels, with the exception of the austenitic group, are strongly attracted to a magnet."

I'm not sure your test is valid.

asianhunter.. what rifle are you talking about? If it is a Thompson Center Omega then it is stainless steel if the box says so. Same as if it were a Knight Rifle. Some of the rifles might look like Stainless Steel such as a CVA but most of the time they have a Nickel finish.

That magnet test I am not sure if it would work or not. If the box said stainless steel, I am sure it would be stainless steel...

Good luck with your rifle.

Anything that has iron in it, (almost every "stainless steel") will attract magnets to some degree.

asianhunter,
Ther are two types of Stainless Steelthe 300 series non-magnetic, and 400 series magnetic. Your OmegaS.S. Omega is made from the 400 series stainless.

The magnet test doesn't work, if you are in doubt try some cold blueing, it will not affect the ss barrel but will "stain" steel
