Need a moose load

RE: Need a moose load
Pittsburghunter,
They are a polymer tipped solid lead bullet from PR. Cabellas also stocks them by the name of Cabellas Dead Center.

Thanks for the photo and story! I was thinking about trying the 250 Gr. Shockwave this year on a late season cow elk hunt. Used the 300 grain last year on a bigbullwith good results, but was wondering if the 250 was tough enough for an elk. I think you answered my question . . . .

I would not feel bad about that shot at all. It made meat!!! Like I said in my first post with what we pay for premium bullets this is what I expect. Did that throw bone into the lungs? Or did it take out parts of the throat? Either way dead is dead.

Great replies guys , keep them coming. What about the 150 grains ( 3 pellets ) of 777 ? Is it a safe load ?

Personally, I would use a full-bore diameter, solid (NOT hollow point)bullet, instead of any of those sabot contraptions, and as heavy a bullet as my rifle would shoot accurately. The Great Plains type, a Powerbelt, or a Maxiball would all work pretty well.
As tothe powder charge. IMO, anything over 100 grains of Black Powder or any of the substituteswith a bullet in the 400+ grain weight category would be more than adequate for moose. (BTW, generally speaking, moose are not as hard to kill as elk are.)
The 444-grain solid-nose Power Belt in .50 is a great elk bullet, and would also do well for moose or large bear! But do shoot as much as you can before then hunt to determine if your rifle "likes" them, and to learn to shoot it well, of course. I have a couple of rifles that shoot Power Belts really well, and several that don't!

That would depend on your rifle and the restrictions and limits of the manufacturer. Also without sufficient barrel length, 3 pellets might be a waste of money and powder. Also take into consideration the concern of accuracy. Your rifle might not shoot accurate with three pellets. If the rifle is not accurate, even a very powerful load is of little value if you can not put that projectile where it needs to go.

RE: Need a moose load
The 250 ShockWave shot pretty well in my gun and based on the pictures Omega50 posted it looks like it would do the job.
I would also consider a full bore conical in your search. I use the 460gr No Excuses over 90gr of loose777 and get 1.5" groups at 100 yards and4" groups at 200 yards. This load is frommy 26" barrel and averages 1470fps. If you have the Optima pro with the 29" barrel you may be able to get 1500 or better out of it. That would put down most anything in North America with no problem.
Good luck.
