Consistent 209 primers
I know in reloading that a primer makes a difference in how a load shoots. I was curious if this is the same with black powder. Has anyone tested this to see which primer has the most consistency? If so which is the best?

RE: Consistent 209 primers
I am aware of the problem too hot a primer is said to make in the development of crud build up in the breech depending on the powder one is using, but as for consistancy, I have no idea how to test them. The only primer that is around this area are the Winchester W209 and they seem to work just fine in my rifles ignition wise.

I have tried remington, federal and winchester. And surprisingly, the winchester is a clear winner in three of my inlines.
Kinda surprising cause in my reloading for Centerfires, winchester is usually not very consistent. But Federal wins out. Winchester is usually the hottest and usually causes flyers in my centerfires. But I like em in ML.

Oh I see how this thread is going with all the "Winchester-moes". Guess you have to include me in this group. Winchester's have worked fine in my rifles as well. I have no intent of changing. Tried Cheddites on a recomendation from MDM but Winchesters work better in their rifle as well.
I bet if I buy CCI's they will work fine as well but right now I have no need to change.

I have tried CCI, Federal and Winchester 209's. The W209 is my primer of choice as well.
I just bought a pack of CCIs.. but haven't had a chance to try them out yet. I hear the Remington 209-4 isn't as hot and supposedly works better w/ 777 powder. And they're releasing the 209-4 as their new ML primer in the upcoming months?

There is no accuracy difference that I can detect between Winchester, Remington, and Federal (or the 209-4's).
I prefer Federal, as they are the hottest, and I've never had a misfire with them in 40-odd inlines. Winchesters have been good as well. Remingtons have not done as well, and have a smaller OD.

I too liked the fed 209's the best but found with pyrodex a crud ring to form much more quickly then with other primers. But since ive switched to cci 209 primers i havent had any issues with a crud ring.

Another vote for the Winchester 209's. I have tried Federal and Remington and just prefer the Winchesters. I didn't like the Remingtons at all because of group sizes and the Federals are just harder to find. Plus when I find a load that works, I don't change anything and it just happens that I found a load using the Winchesters.
