Adequate loads for calf moose?
Iam wondering what load i should be using for a calf moose
I will be shooting from a .300 win mag at about 100-200 yards.
Right now iam using 180 gr
DO you think I should reduce my load? Is it over Kill?

I definately don't think I would go any bigger. I think what your are using right now would work more than fine and if you are accustmed to using the 180's stick with it. It really doesn't take a whole lot to take down a calf moose. I have taken 3 calves in my days and have never seen one go more than 20 yards after cracked with a .308 using 165gr i think it was.

RE: Adequate loads for calf moose?
hey moose hunter, i live in bc too, and all i use is 180 gr bullets, they have worked last three year for me, i got a calf 2 yrs ago, i did hit it in the shoulder and it made a little bigger exit hole, a little meat was wasted but not much by any means, like moose slayer said "try" not to hit it in the shoulder and you will be fine, but i would stick with the 180 bullets.

I THINK NOBODY SHOULD THINK OF SHOOTING A CALF MOOSE WITH ANYTHING LESS THAT A .300 WIN MAG, AND FORGET THOSE WIMPY 180 GRAIN BULLETS, GO WITH AT LEAST 200 GRAINS!
Oh, sorry, for a minute there I flashed back to that post that's 1000 pages long and still going strong (although most of what's in it is pretty weak).
A new list of the perfect hunting round for the EKM types:
Grizzly/polar bears - 20 mm Vulcan (just find a fighter jet and rip the sucker off the wing)
Alaskan moose - .458 Mag, .460 Weatherby (be sure to use the heavier bullets)
Elk - .375 H&H Mag, .416 Rigby for brush (.300s will work if you're recoil conscious)
Deer, antelope, coyotes, etc. - .300 Win Mag, of course (why leave anything in the bag)
P.S. I saw a whitetail doe taken with a .458 once. I think even EKM would approve; it killed her pretty effectively. She looked like somebody put 20,000 volts through her.
