Letter from Senator Reid
Just recieved this response from Senator Reid after I emailed him a while back. Maybe this will re-affirm that there are people in the Government who do care about the states' rights to hunting.
Dear Mr. Evertsen
Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding the rights of
Nevada sportsmen. I appreciate hearing from you.
As you know, I recently introduced legislation (S. 339) to
reaffirm each state's right to regulate hunting and fishing. This is a
Nevada issue, but it also a national issue, as a recent federal circuit
court ruling undermines traditional hunting and fishing laws. In
Conservation Force v. Dennis Manning, the Ninth Circuit Court of
Appeals ruled that state laws that distinguish between state
residents and non-residents in allocating hunting tags and licenses
are constitutionally suspect. I respect the authority of states to
enact laws to protect their legitimate interests in conserving fish
and game, as well as providing opportunities for in-state and out-
of-state residents to hunt and fish.
In our state, conservation groups such as Nevada Bighorns
Unlimited and the Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn include
dedicated sportsmen who spend countless hours and much of their
own money building "guzzlers" in the desert to provide reliable
water for bighorn sheep and other wildlife. These efforts are
critical to the protection of Nevada's rich natural heritage, and I
believe that Nevada sportsmen should be able to enjoy the hunting
and fishing opportunities that they help make possible through
their hard work.
This legislation is very important. The out-of-state hunters
who brought the suit in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals are now
threatening to get a restraining order from federal court to delay
the opening of the big game seasons in Nevada this year. My
legislation will help ensure that Nevada sportsmen continue to
enjoy the sporting opportunities that our state offers. This issue is
of profound importance to Nevada sportsmen, and I am strongly
committed to working with my colleagues to pass this bill as
quickly as possible.

other issues of importance to sportsmen, please visit

My best wishes to you.

Thanks for sharing that Charlie brown! I agree with him, and the issue the US Senators are attempting, to preserve and protect states rights against greed and corruption.

Boy, you'd think this day would never come...when hunters sue to have hunting season delayed. terrible state of events. Doesn't sound like this particular group is very greedy, does it? It's sad that Taulman et al has brought such division. I have empathy for most non-resident hunters (the ones sitting on the sidelines, just watching), who probably can't help but think of this as an opportunity for them, yet don't realize what consequences something like this is gonna have, when many on both sides come to the mindset of us against them. It can't be good for anybody

After posting in another thread that Reid was a not to be trusted socialist, I read your post with great interest. I must say I liked his wording. If I have to eat some crow with my elk I will do it in the name of hunting. BUT - a "reaffirmation" is still empty, do nothing legislation that is easy for him to support with little to no commitment. A "reaffirmation" is dangerous because it implies to judges that laws and rights are not meaningful unless we confirm them - a very typical liberal "give me your money and I'll take care of you" attitude.
Based on your letter I am going to do some of my own digging into what Reid's about, with an open mind. For now I still believe the bill is a do nothing bill at best, and a dangerous one at worst.

If Sen. Reid can be trusted on this issue, why doesn't he also speak out against the many in his own party who perennially try to enact more anti-gun owners’ rights laws?
I think he's another Lib who speaks out of both sides of this mouth to manipulate those easily convinced.

RE: Letter from Senator Reid
I'm from Nevada and am pretty involved in politics. The other thread about Reid being a socialist liberal piece of crap is completely true. However I think that he is genuine on this issue. you have to understand Nevada. election wise its always very close in the stae, Reno is slightly conservative, while Vegas is VERY liberal, and EVERYWHERE else is VERY coservative, so reid has to walk the reelection tightrope very carefully, occasionally he champions an issue that will get him local vote from the moderate conservatives, without endangering his national socialist buddies. so he takes on an issue thatll please locals but has very little impact on demos nationally.

RE: Letter from Senator Reid
Thanks NVMIKE. I was an Elko resident for 9 years and only slightly involved in politics. I have exactly the same make on geographic politics as you describe. While he could be on the right side this time, I still must stand by my statement that this is useless and therefore dangerous legislation. He can support this without any real commitment to either side.
You can only get so much attention from congress. If you bother them with this bill, then later you need a real action, they ask their clerks, "didn't I already vote for a bill on that?" And the clerks say, "yeah, you did. I wouldn't bother with another one, there's more PAC money in other causes". Wasting their time and attention on a do nothing reaffirmation of a right that already exists.
