I have hunted a lot with the 300 Win Mag and the 300 Weatherby Mag. Niether does too awful much meat damage with Hornady 180 grain bullets. They are however way more gun than I ever needed for deer and Elk. A few years ago I traded them all in. I have palns to get a 300 WSM. I have one to use if I need it until then. ( My Brothers) I picked up a 270 WSM a few months ago. No chance to shoot it yet with this cold winter we have had. My favorite 300 was the Remington classic the year it came out in 300 Win Mag. It fit me better than a couple of other 300 Win Mags I had. (savage and Ruger). I hated the Mark Five Weatherby 300 Mag. It had the worst trigger of any rifle I ever owned. The stock about knocked my cheek bone off every time I pulled the trigger. I havn't even looked at a Weatherby Rifle since. I do like the Vanguards though.

Lighter partition style bullets are moving WAY to fast to stay together.
I have driven 140gr partitions out of the 7mmstw at over 3500fps and they still retain close to 70% of their weight after passing through the shoulders of a bull elk.I have also killed elk with 100gr partitions driven at well over 3500fps out of the 257wby with weight retension of well over 60%.

That RUM is just too darn fast for expansion on NA game sized animals

I have personally killed five elk and two bull moose with 180gr bullets out of the 300ultramag and all were quick, clean, one shot kills. What personal experience do you have with the 300 ultramag to make that statement?

I quess it comes down to the same thing so many of these topics come down to. There is no best 300. They will all do about anything that needs done in NA. Some are a little faster than others, Some have more or less recoil than others, Some have shorter bolt throws and come in lighter rifles. They will all shoot a 180 grain bullet fast enough and with enough penetration to kill anything in these parts or most other parts. You can add the 308 and 30-06 to this mix and still do the same thing. Pick the one in the gun you like best and enjoy it.

I really like my new Savage 300win short. I have yet to hunt with it but it shoots freakin' great with about the same recoil as my 30.06.
I for one believe that this cartridge may prove to be the next 30.06 and be around for a long time.

I Agree. The short mags are here to stay. I don't think they will replace the 30-06 but they may cut into the long magnums nich. People will realize that the short mags are plenty for North America and as more guns and loads become available at places like WalMart which they already have here, They will continue to grow in popularity. Its true that they won't shoot the heavier bullets quite as well but in 45 years of hunting I have only used a thirty caliber bullet over 180 grains once and that was just because a guy gave me a box to try out.

Weatherby for me. Shoots dang flat with great knock down. You can choose from alot of different grained bullets. Just hard to beat

I have this same exact set-up as MinnFinn was suggesting.

Tikka is made by Sako. I wont be buying a new rifle anythime soon. This thing does all I could ever ask of her.

After a bunch of research I am planning on purchasing a 300 RUM for the coming big game season.
