Default caliber on moose hunting

What are the most common caliber on moose or bear hunting? Do you prefer fast and light that shoots straigth or heavy and slow that has more energy.

In here(Finland) we use calibers from 6,5X55 SE to 458 win. mag. and most common ones are .308 win , 30-06 sprg and 9,3X62.

Here we go, this should be interesting?

I believe you'll find that the 308 and 30-06 are the most common calibers.

I prefer the 300 Win Mag or larger, favoring the 300 or 340 Wby Mags myself.

More down range speed and power. Just my 2 cents, which will certainly be different from everyone else's small change $$$$.

Moose are large but not difficult to kill. With proper bullet placement any cartridge from the 270 on up will easily take moose.

380 grain Gold Tip Camo XT tipped with a WASP HAMMER SST 125 grain broadhead is my choice....

I have also used 350 Remington Mag, and 444 Marlin, and 308 and all worked just fine....

If you use 300 win mag how far do you shoot? I usually hunt with a dog and shoot about 50 meter. I allways thouhgt that too fast caliber make a too much mess when it hits.

That was taken with .308 on the neck. The arrow was found 2 meters from my dads head on the morning on tree when he was hunting in seattle. He set a camp on the dark and next morning he saw that when he woke up.

We hunt a lot of clear cuts and deep back, valley areas where you'll get some shots out to 300+ yards. Most shots are within 150 yards.

I've never had the opportunity to hunt with dogs, not even for deer and honestly don't know if that is legal in Ontario for moose.

But I also agree with Stupplejumper, proper bullet placement is the key. No use having a magnum powered rifle if you can't shoot it competently.

The 30-06 is by far the most popular caliber for moose hunting in Ontario. Shots are seldom more than 100 yds because of the heavy cover that moose frequent. My own choice is the 7 mm Rem Mag. but the '06 is a top choice.

When I lived in Alaska, I took several with both the 30-06 and 7mmRemMag. Both will easily kill a moose IF you use a bullet suited for big game and hit them correctly (in my case that is broadside, thru both lungs).
Good Hunting,

I agree with Stubblejumper anything 270 and up is fine. Bows work extremely well too and I have watched a good number of moose tip over when stuck with the pointy stick. It all comes down to shot placement and knowing your ability/limitations...maybe more so keeping to them. Moose certainly aren't as hard as one may believe to bring down given there size. With a rifle the furthest I have taken a moose is 225-250 yards, with a bow is 13 paces.

Bears same thing, they tip over very easily with a well placed hit. All except one of my bears has been taken with archery equipment at 20 or under yards. The one that I took with a rifle a 270 was used at around 75 yards.

I would go with a .300 Wby. Mag., or .300 Win. Mag. with a 200 gr. well constructed bullet, or .340 Wby. Mag. with a 250 gr well constructed bullet, or a .338 Win. Mag. with a 225 gr. well constructed bullet. Good luck.
