elk before deployment
Hello everyone,
Name's Dillon (or Doc as I'm known on post). I'm new to this forum and to the state of CO as of February. I'm a huge hunter and finally got my duty station switched here to colorado springs and I'm looking for some advice on elk hunting. I grew up in PA hunting whitetail and turkeys (shot my first merriams bird on fort carson this past spring) but elk is something new to me but also something I've dreamed of since I was a kid. A friend of mine bought his archery either sex tag so since I was tagging along I bought a cow tag since I wanted to save my bull for rifle. Now the real question. I don't really know where to start looking for places to hunt especially with so much land available for OTC. I came very close a few times at a cow with my bow in area 511 but i haven't seen any bulls worth bragging about in the miles me and my friends have hiked that area. Any pointers? I have a wildcat round rifle based off a 300 weatherby mag and am very experienced shooting at a distance (picked a few groundhogs off at 800-1000 yards and a few deer at that distance) so I feel like I may have a good chance if I can find where the elk are. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance!
