For the guy, 30/06 180grn. For the teenager or the woman, don' t matter as to their size, a .270 in 130 grn to 150grn will do the trick. And for those of you who feel the .270 isn' t enough because they may get a running shot as elk enters timber, what a joke. Have you ever seen how fast or slow that teenagers or women are to pull down on an elk or anything for that matter. If it' s not standing still it' s over. Of course there' s a few talented ones out there and they can get the job done no matter what.
Don' t be so whishy washy, give the man your best answer. Not no answer at all.

A 300-win mag or 338-win mag with a muzzle brake.
It' s better to have a rifle that can handle the job. A small caliber rifle can take elk just fine in the right hands. A first time elk hunter does not have " the right hands" .

Hmmm, actually the question is what is a bit wishy washy. The question governs the answer. Kinda leaves me guessing what is really wanted, but if you insist.... " best rifles" .....
For the guy - Winchester Model 70
For the teenager - Winchester Model 70
For the woman - Winchester Model 70
If money is no issue, then substitute Weatherby Mark V.
Sincerely, I would be glad to discuss chamberings and cartridges with a little more to go on though. Hopefully, the effort and/or the expense required to enter a supplemental post in exchange for a well thought out and well intentioned response (my best answer) will not be too prohibitive.
I do not believe that I am the first in this thread to point out the non-specific nature of the question. Simply fabricating a " shoot from the hip" response based upon elk hunting the way we do it and then thrusting it upon his/their situation without trying to get a grip on the details seems wanton and haphazard.

I agree with EKM. Model 70s are my pick, 30-06 the cartridge. Jus' cause I like my rifles like I like my wimmin, soft, but with a kick if you load ' em up real good.
