Ideal Grizzly defense rifle?
If you had to pick one caliber to use against a grizzly what would it be? I have seen a lot of 338 win mags and 375 H&Hs, do you prefer another round? and what are your thoughts on the 450 marlin and other rounds chambered for lever action rifles?

For defense, a Browning BAR 30-06. 5 shots into a grizzly should stop or turn him in short order. At least that is part of the reason I chose the rifle for deer hunting. I only hunt in black bear territory though but figure a semi-auto 30-06 is big but controllable for multiple shots in short order.

For defense, i.e. Stopping a charging Grizz:
Since I don't own a large caliber double rifle, I'd pick my CRF mauser action 458.
Big difference between hunting and stopping! Hunting you will usually get in well place shot BEFORE Grizz knows your there, you make the shot, he's hurt, may still not know where you are and runs off if he can. Stopping - Grizz is mad your there and is coming fast to show you just how mad.
For hunting, many 30 to 35 caliber rifle with a well chosen premium bullet will do. Seldom (but a possibility) you may need to use the hunting rifle to stop a charge. So, I'd pick my 9.3x62 Mauser for hunting with a 286 Nosler partition.
Per your question, Think a 45/70 lever gun would be a choice for Grizz hunting. AND would be flexible for hunting deer, hogs, elk, etc. out to say 150 yards.

x2 and I would suggest using some of these:

If you have your heart set on a rifle then you probably can't go wrong with one of these in either .375 Ruger or .416 Ruger:

If I ever go to bear country in Alaska, this is probably what I would get (in .416 Ruger).
