RE: idaho elk photo 2002
Thanks for the replys.
It took about 3 hours to bone this guy out and cape and get the ivorys out and horns off.
As many of you know it is a real bear to take care of an elk by yourself on a steep slope.
I actually shot him on the flat part of the ridge, about 20 yards to the left of this photo it becomes much steeper.
The wolves in this area have the elk pushed down into the roughest canyon country. There aren' t any easy elk in this area near the Salmon River.
It took another 5 hours to pack 4 loads up to the road. I got lucky and a couple guys on 4 wheelers came along and packed it back the 3 miles to my truck.
I imagine it would have taken me most of the next day to backpack it all out otherwise. Slept REAL good that night!
I didn' t score the the bull but he was somewhat over 300 points.
On a footnote, one of my hunting buddies went to the same spot 5 days later and shot a 6' 4" black bear off the remains of this elk. It was his first bear and he was very excited to have taken it.
Anybody else feel like posting some of your good photos and stories from last year?
