A good shooting bullet is key along withwell constructed bulletworks even better. Any bullet can and will kill an elk long as they are used within their limitations. I prefer Barnes Triple Shocks or Nosler partitions on elk for theeventof an unexpected/unperfect senerio that could happen. Try for the heavier bullet weights. Good luck and happy hunting.

+1 on Noslers. These won't let you down out to 250 to 300 yards: http://www.federalpremium.com/produc...le.aspx?id=236

RE: .270 ammo for elk?
My .270 loves 130grs, so I might try to find like that 130 gr barns tsx....though my dad used noslers in 150gr out of the .270 for black bears...did the job.
Any premium bullet I think would get the job done, from 130-150gr. I'm not sure even if I handloaded I'd jump to 160grs or not, I'd want a flatter trajectory. Less it was certainly going to be up close...then maybe.

I shot several elk with my .270 back in the day that I rifle hunted, and I used both the 150 gr. Nosler Partition and also used the 140 gr. Fail Safe. The 2 elk that I shot with the Fail Safes both were pass throughs, no recovered bullets and all the elk I shot with the Noslers(8 of them)weren't pass throughs. Always found the bullet under the off side skin. BUT, they both worked very well.
