What's your favorite elk hammer?
For folks who have actually taken elk and aren't whimps on recoil management and know how to shoot competently.... "What is your favorite "elk hammer?"
By "elk hammer" I'm not talking about the "just get by" cartridges, as in "archery rifles" (poke a hole in them on a perfect broadside, bleed 'em out, and then hope you can find 'em/retrieve 'em), I mean cartridges with 200+ grain heavy bullets (a little downward adjustment allowed for Barnes).... high energy, deep penetrating, bone shattering, capable of handling unfavorable angles, slap'em down (without a CNS hit)cartridges. Also needs to be right at home with "plenty left over"at up to 300 yards.
[BTW, rifle needs to be capable of being packed in elk country and shot off hand. I've toyed with the idea of taking the 50BMG just for chits and grins, but it would take an additional horse and at 30+ pounds you can't feasibly shoot it off hand.]
Info on bullet type & velocitiesis preferred.
Info on rifle is optional.
Remember, if ya ain't done it, it don't count.
You vote, I'll keep track.

RE: What's your favorite elk hammer?
Nice pic, and there it is.... that qualifies.
My favorite elk hammer is a 375 H&H in an M-70 with 300 grain Nosler Partitions at about 2450 fps.

30-378= 1
375 H&H = 1

Weathery Mark V Fibermark
.340 Weatherby
No heavier than my .300 win mag or any other mag, maybe even 1lb lighter, and kicks less too, and that was unscoped kicking less.
250gr at almost 3000 fps, my kind of set up for elk and larger.
going to try some 275gr Swift A-Frames, if they shoot well, use them on a buffalo this fall.
With my swarovski PH 3-12x50 TDS reticle, those longer shots are no sweat and can be made quickly.

RE: What's your favorite elk hammer?
When I'm not hunting with the old smoke pole (54 Cal) while I have several choices I almost always use the old 30-06. On elk and bear I go with 220 grains, deer 180 grains and 150 grain for Antelope.

Me since most of my elk have been brought down with a .338 win mag, bullet has always been the same 210 gr Nosler parttion(but rifles have changed many times,Remingtons,Winchesters,Rugers,Sako).
So I would have to give my vote to it.
