Default Looking for a good round

Going black bear hunting in the cascades in Washington this fall, and I am looking for others experience with different rounds for a 308 WIN. I've overwhelmed myself with all the ballistics info available online, and just want some good honest opinions. Right now I'm leaning towards a 168 grain Hornady. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bubba

I've never bear hunted, but I'd say a Nosler partition will work real well on just about anything. Probably a 180gr.

You are definitely shooting the .308? or what other options? black bear......308 id def use 165 or heavier.....and probably want 180gr.

Spot n stalk? or over bait? dogs? can be a huge difference in what round I'd choose then.

What ever your shooting out of your gun right now will work
rule #1 wait until the bear is broadside don't worry they will turn
#2 Hold dead center up from the leg, The bellyhair can be deciving and you'll shoot to low
#3 once you have shot the bear if it is still at the bait shoot it again your guide will thank you for not having to track the bear through the woods.

Most any 30 cal. bullet from 150 to 200 grains will work just fine...

Just avoid FMJ or match bullets....Other 30 cal bullets of 150 grains or heavier are designed for big game...

Most 30 cal bullets of LESS than 150 grains are designed for varmints...

Yeah, I really want to hunt with the 308. I inherited the gun from my wife's dad. It's an older Remington model 700 gamemaster pump action with a 1:12 barrell twist. From other research I've done, I don't think the 1:12 twist allows me to hold accuracy with 180 grain. We will be hunting spot n stalk with no guide. Washington state voters in their tree-hugging wisdom banned hounds and bait about 5 years ago.

I have an older remington pump with a 1:12 barrell twist. The 180 grains don't hold a very good pattern when sighting in. Any other suggestions?

Black bears are not hard to kill. Pick a bullet like the Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame or Nosler Accubond. Any bullet that is designed to expand & retain weight during penetrationwill workjust fine. The 308 is a good choice for black bear.

Good luck hunting,

WK
