I'd use it on a deer. Can't think of much else, maybe a black bear. Elk? I'd use a .300+ magnum. Antelope? I'd use a .243-.270
Get yourself a .270(maybe a .243, or .25-06 or 6mm Rem) and a .300 mag or .338 mag. I'd take those 2 over a .30-06 anyday.

sure there are better calibers for specific uses, such as .338 for grizzly and 25-06 for antelope; but all around one-rifle-only, I would consider the 30-06. I've killed elk, moose, bear and deer with it. No complaints as long as the range is reasonable. Shot placement is everything.

its the most overrated round ever, its a deer cartridge, and its ok at that. 150grains, deer, done.
Skip the '06 and get yourself a few rifles of different calibers, none of them being a '06

30-06 is a very popular and great caliber for hunting in North America, on most game. I have personally seen Elk, Deer, Pronghorn, and even Black Bears taken with that caliber, but my personal caliber of choices is the 7mm remington mag, which is not very common and talked about. It is a fairly flat shooting caliber and is capable of taking all game in North America from deer to grizzlies. But it's not about how powerful the caliber to an extent it's about shot placement, range and terrain. It will all depend on what you are hunting and how far of a shot you will be taking, but mostly you can buy a 300 weatherby mag or even the 338 but if you can't handle the recoil it has what good is that gun for you. Honestly the 30-06 is a good all around gun for most North American big game. Thats my 2 cents.

I have quite a few rifles including most of the calibers mentioned and IMO the 30-06 is one of the if not the best all around caliber. It is what I shoot most often.

Since it just celebrated 100 years I'd say it had proven it's self. As stated shot placement and distance is the key to success. As very wise ol' barrel maker told me over the phone "All these new magnums coming out are making up for poor marksmanship".

I love my '06's. Yes you can use them on anything in North America, including Bigfoot. Yes, there are better choices for each game species.... But for the all around, easy to get ammo for you can't beat a .30-06. Anywhere you go you will be able to find ammo. It is a very good round.
