RE: Favorite Mule Deer Cartridge?
I hunt whitetail with .243, .308. .30-30, .30-06, and .300WSM. Last November I went Mule Deer hunting in Colorado and was considering purchasing an OTC elk tag as well. I felt confident both my 06 and .300WSM would do the job, but took the .300WSM. After all the climbing / hiking I did, I'm glad I took the .300WSM as it is 2lbs lighter. My new rule is, If need a spotting scope to find game, I'm taking the .300WSM.
My .30-06 (top in picture)is a Winchester Model 70 Ranger with a Hogue stock (full bedded aircraft grade aluminum stock that is mechaniclly and chemically bonded to the hogue rubber) Great rifle but is better for tree stands or short walks.
The .300WSM is a Model 700 stainless and it weights about 8lbs with the scope. It also gave me the added confidence for the potential long shots. It performed well in Colorado. I took a buck off his feet at 230 yards with one shot (180gr Federal Accubond).

I have clients bring everything from 338 win mags to 300 win mags and more. I usually tell them the best rifle is the one you can shoot the best with, these aren't cape buffalo, these are just Nebraska deer sojust hit 'em in the pump house and they're done. I personally use a 25-06 for both whitetail and mule deer as well as calling coyotes.
