Default Bear Hunting!

Hi Guys and ladies I have been lurking around here for a while but this is my first time posting. I was wondering if any of you hunt bears over bait? I work as a guide in north western Ontario Canada we hunt bears over bait I was wondering what you guys use for bait. We use kitchen scraps and meat scraps from the butcher I was wondering what you use and if you have any tips or secrets?? Thanks guys

Hey Syd, welcome aboard! I've only tried baiting twice, both times unsuccessful, so I'm pretty sure I'm not the most qualified to answer this question for you.

From what I've learned though, through my mistakes or through what I've learned on the boards, is when they do start coming in, to keep quantiful food for them so they keep their interest peaked for that site. If they start coming in later though, after dark, I've been told to cut back on the amount of food, and that sometimes gets them to come in earlier.

We found cob and cheap dog food can be bought very cheap, and I've heard that bears will devour that. If you can't scrounge up enought kitchen and meat scraps, that could be used as a filler for more quantity of food.

welcome to the board. I live in and hunt for bears here in New Brunswick. I hunt for them in the spring over bait which is a little different then in the fall. If I'am not mistaken you guys up there only have a fall season. In the spring I like to use bread, donuts, jo louis cakes etc. I have a Bread store near my house that sell old bread of 75 cents a tray which is 8 loafs. Grease is a key per bait site I use about 15 gal which is 3 buckets. The best grease comes from mom and pop restaunts. Mc donalds and kfc change grease to often. Also I clean out the freezer and throw all the old freezer burnt stuff out. They love old ice cream! and popcicles leave the ice cream in the container and put the popicle in a old ice cream container besure to get the sticks out first. anise oil works awesome to put pour it over and around the hole and get some molasses too about 5 gal and pour it over the bread but not the good stuff back strap or black strap stuff works just as well and it is really really cheap!. so the stuff you need is grease, anise oil, molasses, beard, old dounts, old freeze burnt stuff, some fish (i go mackeral fishing in the summer and catch a couple dozen extra for bait). They will eat just about anything

Syd: Got any Archery Moose tags? What's the name of your outfit and where are you located? You can email me by clicking on the email icon above my post or click my name. That way the Mod Squad won't lock ya up for advertising. I hunt North of Ignace. Welcome to the board.

Syd, welcome to posting, good to have you onboard.

Since I have never hunted bear, I too am notthe best on this topic, but from what my friends that do use, it is just about any scraps, the sweeter the better, so plenty of molasses, and I have heard of the dog food being used a lot. Let us know how you do on bringing them in and what you use.

The best of luck in all your hunting endeavors!!!

God Bless,
Dave

Syd: Nice website. I'll explore more when I have time. I'll also inquire about archery hunts.

The best tip Or advice on bear hunting I can give is to crib your baits. Cribbing allows for the correct shot oppertunity and also aides in judging the size of the bears. As for bait, try popcorn. Its not possible for a bear drag off too much at one time.

The way we hunt is we take a flat one foot by one foot peice of board and put it on the ground then we put the bait on that (Kitchen scraps mostly some little debbie cakes stuff like that) The we put a 5 gallon bucket upside down with a rock (if there is one around) on top and as many logs as possible so it looks natural and so all that can get it is a bear then in a circle about 10 to 20 feet from the bait we hang four to five scent rags to attract the bears with a really sweet smelling liquid that the boss makes and thats it sometimes a honey or sugar burn to get them going but other then that check the bait everyday and keep em coming we did pretty well this year we had 9 guests that hunted bear 5 got their bears 3 passed on bears and one had bad luck then me and two other guides hunted for ourselves and one of the three of us got a bear (not me unfortenualty) but all in all a good season
Nub I talked to my boss the other day and they did accomidate an archery moose hunter this year so he is willing I would suggest you get in touch asap as the hunts fill up quick we also accomidate archery bear if intrested its nice cause the season starts aug 15 I am hoping to go and guide again this summer so maybe I will get to see you there

Syd: I'm already booked for archery moose in unit 15a. I've been hunting there for a few years but the price is starting to creep up a bit. If I switched I'd have to learn a new location. I'm just now getting comfortable where I'm at. <BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
we also accomidate archery bear if intrested

Is there any other way? The wife says I have enough bears.
