DIY Elk in colorado....
Me and my bud plan on doing a trip out to colorado after our senior year. We want to hunt on PUBLIC land and plan to be using our bows. Sometime in late august. What do you guys recomend for hunting public land elk? Like calls, setups, areas, etc. Also are the elk high or low in evlavation. And is it possible to take some nice bulls off public land. Hopefully it isnt like public land deer hunting back here in PA[:@]
Thanks yall
Thanks yall

on the dow website ( the link above ) that hunter 59 gave you. check out the game maps. they supply maps that you can list a search for elk, then summer then winter. it will show you the areas that the herds hold in...
with a bit of researh you can find how large the herds are for that area, they also supply the numbers of past years harvests for the same area.
tons of info there.
archery season opens the 3rd weekend in Aug. ( usually around the 25th. )
its usually warm and the elk will be where they can stay cooler. ( usually this means high ) but not always, dark timber, wallers, and the herds.
we have herds that stay at 10,000 ft and move up and down
we also have herds that are located in areas of 6500 ft elevation and move from there.
so saying how high should we hunt?
I live at over 10,000 ft and have elk around here year round.
you can go down to denver and have areas that hold elk year round ( 6000 ft )
its more so what is there area ( for that herd )
good luck
